Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Isaiah 27:10

Yet the defensed city - Gesenius supposes that this means Jerusalem. So Calvin and Piscator understand it. Others understand it of Samaria, others of Babylon (as Vitringa, Rosenmuller, and Grotius), and others of cities in general, denoting those in Judea, or in other places. To me it seems plain that Babylon is referred to. The whole description seems to require this; and especially the fact that this song is supposed to be sung after the return from captivity to celebrate their deliverance.... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Isaiah 27:11

When the boughs thereof are withered - This is a further description of the desolation which would come upon Babylon. The idea is, that Babylon would be forsaken until the trees should grow and decay, and the branches should fall to be collected for burning. That is, the desolation should be entire, undisturbed, and long continued The idea of the desolation is, therefore, in this verse carried forward, and a new circumstance is introduced to make it more graphic and striking. Lowth, however,... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Isaiah 27:10-11

Isaiah 27:10-11. Yet, &c. Before this glorious promise, concerning the removal of Israel’s sin and calamity, shall be fulfilled, a dreadful and desolating judgment shall come upon them. The defenced city shall be desolate Jerusalem, and the rest of the defenced cities of the land, the singular number being put for the plural; and the habitation forsaken The most inhabited and populous parts of the country; or, as נוה properly signifies, their pleasant habitation, whether in the... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Isaiah 27:2-13

Shameful exile and glorious return (27:2-13)From its beginning, Israel was God’s chosen people. God compares the nation to a beautiful vineyard, which he has cared for and guarded continually (2-3). Israel’s enemies are likened to thorns and briars, and unless they repent of their wrongdoing and seek God’s forgiveness, they will suffer a fiery destruction (4-5). Israel, by contrast, will flourish like a giant tree and bring blessing to the whole world (6). Before that can happen, however, God... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Isaiah 27:10

"For the fortified city is solitary, a habitation deserted and forsaken, like the wilderness: there shall the calf feed, there shall he lie down and consume the branches thereof."This is once more a reference to that time-period mentioned in Revelation 16:9, near the close of the dispensation of the grace of God, when the "cities of the nations" shall fall. This will occur at a time when Adam's race shall almost have run its course, and when, due to rampant wickedness, God will have no moral... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Isaiah 27:11

"When the boughs thereof are withered, they shall be broken off; the women shall come and set them on fire; for it is a people of no understanding: therefore he that made them will not have compassion upon them, and he that formed them will show them no favor."This is once more a picture of the judgment of mankind at the last day. It is incorrect to limit this to racial Israel, because racial Israel is not to be destroyed in the total sense until the final reckoning and destruction of all of... read more
