F.B. Meyer's 'Through the Bible' Commentary - Joshua 8:18-29

the Enemy Completely Destroyed Joshua 8:18-29 Joshua’s preparations were skillfully made, and in that very place where Israel had been so disastrously defeated they scored a great victory and took large spoil, especially cattle, which they drove in triumph to the camp at Gilgal. Taught by Christ’s gentle spirit, we turn our eyes away from the doom that befell the entire population. In those days notions of God’s justice were not tempered by knowledge of His mercy. But the Bible records the... read more

G. Campbell Morgan's Exposition on the Whole Bible - Joshua 8:1-35

As the result of the severity of the discipline exercised in the case of Achan, the nation returned to obedience, and consequently Jehovah immediately uttered the word of reassurance to Joshua and the campaign moved victoriously forward. The story of the taking of Ai is one of brilliant military strategy. Thus again the fact was brought into prominence that in prosecuting the work of Jehovah there must ever be a recognition of the value and use of the best in human reason. Strategy without... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Joshua 8:25

‘ And all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve eleph, even all the men of Ai.’ This figure probably included the men from Bethel. The habit of mentioning the allies only once and then assuming their presence occurs elsewhere. Compare Judges 3:13 in a passage which might give the impression that only Moabites were involved, while the Ammonites and Amalekites were involved too; and Judges 6-8 where it is the Midianites who are prominent in most of the passages even though they... read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Joshua 8:1-29

Joshua 8:1-Joel : . Capture of Ai.— Here we have the second and the successful attempt to take Ai. That two accounts have been combined is obvious. In Joshua 8:3 Joshua sends 30,000 men as an ambuscade against the city; in Joshua 8:12, he sends 5000 men. No doubt 30,000 is an error for 3000. The writer of 20, who tells us that the whole population of Ai was 12,000, is also the writer of Joshua 8:3. We may take it that he was far more likely to write 3000 than 30,000. In Joshua 8:17 the words... read more

Not strictly, but largely so called, who were now in Ai, either as constant and settled inhabitants, or as sojourners, and such as came to them for their help, such as being confederate with them are esteemed as one with them; for it is evident that the men of Beth-el are included in this number, Joshua 8:17, the Israelites who took this number being unable to distinguish who belonged to the one city, and who to the other. read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Joshua 8:3-29

CRITICAL NOTES.—Joshua 8:3. Thirty thousand … and sent them away] Probably 30,000 was the entire number chosen to operate against Ai, and of these 5000 were sent, as stated in Joshua 8:12, to form the ambush between Bethel and Ai. To suppose two ambushes, one of 30,000 on the south-west, and one of 5000 on the north-west of the city, requires the further supposition that Joshua would have led all the remaining men of war in the camp, nearly half a million, to the first assault. As the fighting... read more

Chapter 8Then they went back to Ai, now this time under the direction of the Lord. Joshua sent part of the army around the other side of the city to hide in ambush. And then he said, "We'll come to the city like before and attack it with a frontal attack, and then we'll pretend like we are retreating as before. We'll start running and let them chase us. And after they've all come out and chase after us, then you fellows come from your hiding places and take the city."So Joshua sent some of his... read more

Joshua 8:4 . Ye shall lie in wait: la ruse du guerre. The craft of war is lawful, if war itself be lawful; and experience is often of more avail than strength. Joshua 8:25 . Twelve thousand. Here is proof of the truth of the report of the twelve spies, who said, “The people are more numerous than we.” The country was full of towns, and the towns full of people. The walls of the towns had greatly preserved them in their wars with one another. Joshua 8:32 . He wrote there upon the... read more

Joshua 8:3-29So Joshua arose, and all the people of war.All the people at work for JesusI. Consider the advice of the spies which led to such a shameful defeat (Joshua 7:3).1. Here we shall have to deal with the error of supposing that a part only of the Church will be sufficient to perform the work of the whole.2. In Joshua’s day this error sprang up among the Israelites because, on account of their sins, God was displeased with them. When God is in the midst of a Church He guides its counsels... read more
