Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on the Bible - Jeremiah 49:28-33

28-33 Nebuchadnezzar would make desolation among the people of Kedar, who dwelt in the deserts of Arabia. He who conquered many strong cities, will not leave those unconquered that dwell in tents. He will do this to gratify his own covetousness and ambition; but God orders it for correcting an unthankful people, and for warning a careless world to expect trouble when they seem most safe. They shall flee, get far off, and dwell deep in the deserts; they shall be dispersed. But privacy and... read more

The Popular Commentary by Paul E. Kretzmann - Jeremiah 49:23-39

Against Damascus, Hazok, and Elam v. 23. Concerning Damascus. Hamath, a powerful city on the Orontes and formerly the capital of a country of the same name, is confounded, and Arpad, another mighty city, both of them now within the confines of Syria, for they have heard evil tidings; they are faint-hearted, full of concern on account of the reports which they have heard; there is sorrow on the sea, terror among the inhabitants along its shores; it cannot be quiet, there is no rest for... read more

6. Prophecy against the AmmonitesJeremiah 49:1-6The Ammonites also, the brother nation of the Moabites, (Genesis 19:37) after centuries of various conflict (comp. Judges 3:13; Judges 10:7 sqq.; Judges 11:32; 1 Samuel 11:0; 2 Samuel 10:11; 2 Samuel 12:26; 2 Chronicles 20:0; 2 Chronicles 26:8; 2 Chronicles 27:5) in consequence of the deportation of the East-Jordanic tribes have appropriated a part of their territory. This fact forms the point of departure for the present prophecy. Older... read more

G. Campbell Morgan's Exposition on the Whole Bible - Jeremiah 49:1-39

Against the children of Ammon Jeremiah raised a protest because their king was in possession of Gad. He declared that by the fierce judgment of war, they were to be dispossessed and driven forth. The message ends with a gleam of hope, in which the prophet foretold that again the children of Ammon would be made captive. Concerning Edom, destruction is foretold, in spite of her wisdom. The reference to wisdom in Teman may be a satirical literary allusion to the fact that it was the birtbplace... read more

Prophecy Of Judgment On The Nations Continued (Jeremiah 49:1 to Jeremiah 51:64 ). Having learned that judgment was coming on Egypt, Philistia and Moab, we now go on to learn that it will also visit Ammon, Edom, Damascus, Arabia, Elam and then Babylon itself. Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Jeremiah 49:28-33

Judgment Coming On Kedar and Hazor At The Hands Of Nebuchadrezzar (Jeremiah 49:28-33 ). In this case it is made plain who the assailants are to be, Nebuchadrezzar and Babylon. It is therefore noteworthy that Nebuchadrezzar is portrayed as operating under God’s instructions in smiting Kedar and Hazor. Kedar were eponymously descended from Ishmael (Genesis 25:13; 1 Chronicles 1:29), but the large majority of the tribes would not be direct descendants, but descended from peoples who had united... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Jeremiah 49:30

YHWH Gives Advice To The People Of Hazor (Jeremiah 49:30 ). Jeremiah 49:30 “Flee you, wander far off, Dwell in the depths (deep caves), O you inhabitants of Hazor, The word of YHWH, For Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon has taken counsel against you, And has conceived a purpose against you.” The call comes from YHWH for the people of Hazor to flee. This may indicate that the tribes of Hazor were to the south of the area, thus having time to flee. There may well have been a tent town of that name... read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Jeremiah 49:28-33

Jeremiah 49:28-Micah : . The Arabian Tribes.— Kedar ( Jeremiah 2:10) a branch of the Ishmaelites ( Genesis 25:13), is here used generically for Arab tribes E. of Palestine. Hazor, perhaps a collective term meaning “ settlements” , seems to denote Arabs in village communities, as distinct from the nomadic tribes. Yahweh summons the foe (here identified with the Babylonians, though no campaign of Nebuchadrezzar against Arabs is known), and promises that they shall capture the nomads’ tents and... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Jeremiah 49:30

The words seem to be the prophet’s words of advice to this people, to make all the haste they could away, and to secure themselves as well as they could, because the king of Babylon had certainly been taking counsel against them, and was resolved to disturb them. See Jeremiah 49:8, where the like counsel is given to the Edomites. read more
