Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Revelation 11:3-4

‘And I will give to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for a thousand, two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the Lord of the earth.’ Over the period (three and a half years) when the Holy City is trodden down by the Gentiles ‘two witnesses’ will arise to testify on God’s behalf. They arrive without introduction as though the previous verse had been speaking of them. This must count strongly as their... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Revelation 11:4

The Two Witnesses. ‘These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the Lord of the whole earth.’ The two olive trees appear in Zechariah 4:3 and are ‘ the sons of oil (anointed ones) who stand by the Lord of the whole earth’ (Zechariah 4:14). There they refer to Joshua the High Priest and Zerubbabel the Prince, both anointed for their roles in accordance with the laws of Israel. So here are two similar leaders set apart by God as His servants in a time of crisis. Joshua... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Revelation 11:5

‘And if anyone desires to hurt them fire comes from their mouth and devours their enemies, and if any man will desire to hurt them, in this manner must he be killed.’ This is not to be taken literally. The fire that comes from their mouths is like the two-edged sword coming from the mouth of the Son of Man, a pictorial image of a spiritual reality. John has in mind here the words of God in Jeremiah, ‘Is not my word like a fire?’ (Jeremiah 23:29). A similar picture was used of the unconverted... read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Revelation 11:1-13

Revelation 11:1-1 Chronicles : . The Interlude continued. The Second Episode.— The first two verses are introductory, and represent the survey or measuring of the holy city by the seer. Then comes the prophecy concerning the two witnesses, followed by the first appearance in the book of “ the beast” or Antichrist ( Revelation 11:7). Revelation 11:1 . a reed: a measuring rod (Ezekiel 40 ff., Zechariah 2:1), Ezekiel’ s reed ( Ezekiel 40:5) was nine feet long.— measure the temple: the allusion... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Revelation 11:4

Here is a manifest allusion to Zechariah’s vision, Zechariah 4:2,Zechariah 4:3,Zechariah 4:11-14, though with some little difference. He saw a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which were upon the top thereof: and two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof. The angel tells him, that these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes did empty... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Revelation 11:5

And if any man will hurt them; that is, my faithful ministers, the two olive branches before mentioned, which fill the candlesticks with oil. Fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: here is a plain allusion to the stories of Moses and Elijah, calling for fire from heaven; but God showeth, that the victory of his ministers under the gospel shall not be by a miraculous fire called for down from heaven, (as Elijah hurt the captains and their bands sent to apprehend him),... read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Revelation 11:1-19

THE FATE OF JERUSALEM AND ITS TEMPLECRITICAL AND EXEGETICAL NOTESTHE paragraph, Revelation 11:1-13, gives the contents of the “little book,” which are in part joyful and in part bitter. The marking off of a portion of the temple answers to the sealing of the hundred and forty-four thousand in chap. 7. Here there is a symbolical reserve of a portion of the temple from impending evils, as there a reserve of an elect portion of God’s people. “Just as those were sealed to mark them for ever as the... read more

Chuck Smith Bible Commentary - Revelation 11:1-19

Chapter 11So there was given unto me a reed like unto a rod ( Revelation 10:11 ; Revelation 11:1 ):That is a measuring stick about the length of a rod.and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and those that worship therein ( Revelation 11:1 ).Now, this tells us many things. First of all, that the temple is to be rebuilt, because this is a yet future event. In fact, this is a event that takes place during the midst of the tribulation period, for we have... read more

Sutcliffe's Commentary on the Old and New Testaments - Revelation 11:1-19

Revelation 11:1 . There was given me a reed like unto a rod to measure the temple of God, the new-testament church. The prophet of old had a similar vision, and all the prophets spake of the enlargement of Christ’s kingdom. Ezekiel 40:2-5. Micah 4:1-2. John also was to measure the altar which stood in the inner court; and the altar here is figuratively understood, as in the epistles of Ignatius, who considered a separation from the altar as an exclusion from the church. The altar is a... read more
