Swiss anatomist and physiologist. Born October 16, 1708 at Berne, Switzerland; died December 7, 1777. Famed for his anatomical and physiological researches, particularly on the irritability of the muscles. Directed the organization of the theater of anatomy and school of obstetrics of the University of Gottingen. Wrote numerous anatomical and botanical works.
