(1829-1884) British diplomatist and ambassador, born Florence; died Potsdam. He was secretary of legation at Florence and resident in Rome till 1870, where he was the real, though unofficial representative of England at the Vatican, and rendered Archbishop Manning great service by preventing any outside interference in the Vatican Council. From 1871-1884 he was ambassador at Berlin, and was created a baron in 188l.
