(1567-1623) Missionary and martyr, born Castro-Giovanni, Sicily; died Yezo, Japan. He entered the Society of Jesus, 1585, and began his apostolate in Japan, 1602, remaining there after publication of the edict expelling all missionaries. He was the first missionary to penetrate Yezo, Jasu, and Cai, but after making many converts, seeing that his neophytes were persecuted because of his preaching, he gave himself up to the authorities, and underwent martyrdom by fire in the public square of Yezo.
