He became acting pastor at Cleveland, Ohio, 1841-42; Birmingham, Michigan, 1842-49; Elmira, N.Y., 1849-50; Hartford, Ohio, 1850-53; principal of the preparatory department of Oberlin College, 1853-69; president of Berea College, Kentucky, from 1869 until his death, October 2, 1889.

John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
