He graduated from Brown University in 1817, and studied theology at Andover Theological Seminary for over a year (1821); was ordained in 1822; then took charge of a Baptist Church in Clarlestown, Massachusetts; next of the First Baptist Church of Hartford, Connecticut (1836); of New Bedford, Massachusetts (1839); of the Central Church, Newport, R.I. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
