Kanon is one of the names by which the official list or register of the Church is known. It is also frequently spoken of as κατάλογος ἱερατικός, list of the priesthood, and hence spiritual persons were denominated κανονικοί, canonici, and οἱ τοῦ κανόνος, men of the canon, because their names were entered in the list. The word κανών had also other significations. The assent of the catechumens to a summary of the leading articles of the Christian faith was required, and this creed was variously designated; sometimes κανών, the rule, sometimes πίστις, the faith, and symbolum, a badge or token (see Riddle, Christian Antiquities, s. y.).
