Alistair Begg

Alistair Begg has been in pastoral ministry since 1975. Following graduation from The London School of Theology, he served eight years in Scotland at both Charlotte Chapel in Edinburgh and Hamilton Baptist Church.

In 1983, he became the senior pastor at Parkside Church near Cleveland, Ohio. He has written several books and is heard daily and weekly on the radio program, Truth For Life. The teaching on Truth For Life stems from the week by week Bible teaching at Parkside Church.

Alistair Begg is a strong advocate of historic Protestant Evangelical theology. He stresses the importance of believing the Bible to be the completely authoritative Word of God, and the importance of using the mind to know the Bible and knowing God through repentance and faith in Jesus.

We are commanded by Jesus in Matthew 9:38 to pray that the Lord would send out workers into his harvest field (and we should take it as a corollary that if we pray for that, we must also be willing to be part of that mission by being workers in that harvest field).

We have lost our first honor and health, and we have become the subjects of pain and weakness, suffering and death. This is the effect of the fall.

We must not allow ourselves to slip into a false spirituality that treats our bodily existence as if it can be separated from our so-called "spiritual" life -- as if our spiritual life carries on quite independently from what is happening to our bodies.

Since we are helpless sinners, salvation must be a free gift. God bestows it on people without regard to any merit—supposed or real. Grace has to do with the guilty. Grace by its nature is not a proper gift for the righteous and deserving but for the undeserving and sinful.

There is always more we can do in ministry, but God is not asking 'Can you do more?'. He is asking 'Do you love me?' Some of those extras are not always as vital as we think them to be.

It’s never too late for repentance. With God’s help we can chart a new course and set our sails in the direction of obedience to God.

While in the writings of other religions we discover man seeking ways to reach up to God, here in the uniqueness of the gospel we learn of One who comes seeking to save that which is lost.

As someone who has spent the last decade training young men and women for Christian service, I have been keen to help them see that the best kinds of ministry are, more often than not, long term and low key. I have tried to prepare them for a marathon, not a short, energetic sprint. In other words, to help them have a lifetime of sustainable sacrifice, rather than an energetic but brief ministry that quickly fades in exhaustion.

If we buy into the church culture of celebrity, we drift away from following Jesus faithfully.

I do not believe it is possible to embrace the premises of ecumenical strategy and still draw the conclusions of evangelical orthodoxy.

A good church is a Bible-centered church. Nothing is as important as this--not a large congregation, a witty pastor, or tangible experiences of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus did not come to live as an example of how to die as a martyr, but as a substitute, taking the place that we deserve in order that we might enjoy what we don't deserve. This is good news. Let us tell all our friends!
