This sermon explains the aftermath of the Bread of Life Sermon when Pharisees and scribes come from Jerusalem to accuse Jesus, but the tables are turned when they are exposed for their hypocrisy, vain worship, and how they merely honor God with their lips but their hearts are far from Him. Pastor Chad introduces the sermon from Mt. 23 that shows how Religious hypocrites can be identified by those who twist and replace the Scriptures with their traditions and reject the gospel of grace in favor of their own man-made doctrines of earning salvation by their own good deeds. The five main points of the sermon look at the context, accusation, rebuttal, evidence, and conclusion of this showdown between Jesus and the religious but not saved.
1. The Context – Pharisees and scribes travel 90 miles from Jerusalem to Galilee to confront Jesus as they are bent on killing Him(John 7:1).
2. The Accusation – The Pharisees’ Showdown with Jesus and his disciples over the Tradition of ceremonially washing hands before meals (Matthew 15:1-2, Mark 7:1-5).
3. The Rebuttal – Jesus exposes the hypocrisy and sham worship of the Pharisees (Matthew 15:3-4, Mark 7:6-8).
4. The Evidence – Jesus gives a specific example of tradition that contradicts Scripture - the tradition of calling things "Corban" (given to God) in order to not help/honor parents in need (Matthew 15:5-6, Mark 7:9-12).
5. The Conclusion – Jesus calls the Pharisees what they really are (Hypocrites) and calls them out on what they are really doing (worshiping in vain by elevating tradition over Scripture) (Matthew 15:7-9, Mark 7:13).
Pastor Chad ends with an application that calls for examination to make sure we are rejecting any Pharisaical tendencies and are pursuing greater obedience/worship motivated by love.
