Today we begin the last series of our studies together in the book of Acts. We will pick up the story at the beginning of Chapter 21 and move on into the last section of this great book, where Luke recounts for us Paul's imprisonment in Jerusalem and his voyage to Rome. The book closes with Paul a prisoner of Caesar, living in his own hired house there at Rome. And so we will call this last series The Prisoner of the Lord, for here we find Paul in the new and unaccustomed role of prisoner -- unaccustomed, that is, for any length of time -- Paul in chains, languishing two years in the prison at Caesarea and some three years, most scholars feel, as a prisoner in Rome.

Paul's Mistake  (Acts 21:1-26)

We arrive this morning at the last page of the first chapter of church history -- the last chapter of the book of Acts. Luke's unfinished book introduces us to the whole record of the history of the church which continues to this day. This chapter is a resumption of the cliffhanger with which we concluded the previous chapter. There we left the Apostle Paul and his company on their way to Rome but stranded as shipwrecked sailors on the coast of the island of Malta. They foundered here after a long and perilous voyage during which they were driven across the Mediterranean before a terrible storm. They lost all their gear and finally the ship itself was utterly lost, just as Paul had said. But their lives were saved, as he had also predicted, because an angel had told him of all this. Now we find the apostle and Julius the centurion and all the company of the ship on Malta as Luke picks up the story in Chapter 28:

The End of the Beginning  (Acts 28)

Acts is the book that reveals the power of the church. Therefore, when a church begins to dwindle, lose its power, and turn dull and drab in its witness, it needs desperately to get back into the spirit, expectation, knowledge and teaching of the book of Acts. In this book, the principles of the exchanged life -- "Not I, but Christ" -- is dramatically unfolded.

If the book of Acts were taken out of our New Testament, we would never understand the rest of it. It would be like a child with his front tooth missing. When you close the record of the gospels, you see nothing but a handful of Jews in the city of Jerusalem, the center of Jewish life, talking together about a kingdom for Israel.

As I returned to my faith, one of the key ingredients was a practical reality of God that I discovered in His word. I learned by reading in the bible about the many characters we all know. They weren't just irrelevant people founded in myth. They were real. They were flawed. But, they interacted with God and God interacted with them.  I also, found deep conviction and transforming power as the Holy Spirit began His work. The reality of God set in when I saw transformation occurring in my life; those close to me could see the transformation... transformation that was beyond my own muster and ability.

God is Real! Here's my testimony about how He moved in my life. This post is much more detailed than episode 1. "I went from being a churched Christian, to a skilled backslider, to a world loving man rejecting God, to a restored believer who enjoyed the risk free comforts of church, to having a full-fledged passion to unashamedly proclaim Jesus Christ crucified, dead and risen. After all, if as in the words of Paul, this message ”… is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believe then who am I to not proclaim it in both my life and words?" What a bumpy road that was! Was yours? I really discovered the reality of God in His Word. That is the topic of our next podcast. Stay tuned!
