Before we can understand the development of disciples in Luke, we must first understand what it means to be a disciple … and how that differs from our traditional understanding.  It is a common misconception that those we refer to as Christians also fit Jesus’ definition of “disciple.”  In actual point of fact, most of today’s Christians are much more like the religious people of Jesus’ day: the Pharisees, Sadducees, Lawyers (bible scholars), elders, Rabbis, priests, etc.  
<o:p> </o:p>
Following Jesus is not an easy path, nor a cheap one.  It will cost us everything.  But it is worth it!  By accepting this challenge, we volunteer for a life that’s possibly void of many of the things we now rely upon: friends, family, money, sex, pleasure, wealth, popularity … but what we get in exchange is the kind of strength that relieves us of the need for those things.  We become so strong that we can live a life that would feel like torture to most people … and we can smile through it.  The storms that would mostly provoke others to terror – become opportunities for us to take a nap.  
<o:p> </o:p>
How do we get there?  We start small, and work our way up.  It all begins with commitment.  This is a commitment we can make because we trust God so much that we can give it all up, and trust that He will protect us while we care for others, and not for ourselves.  
<o:p> </o:p>
Only by making such a commitment will you ever understand Jesus.  You simply cannot have anything more than intellectual knowledge of him without the commitment.  But having made the commitment to follow Jesus and trust everything about yourself to God … you will discover “peace that passes understanding,” and “rest for your soul.”

Before we can understand the development of disciples in Luke, we must first understand what it means to be a disciple … and how that differs from our traditional understanding.  It is a common misconception that those we refer to as...

This is the first of a series of lessons to teach discipleship from the book of Luke in the bible. 
This first lesson introduces you to the concept of discipleship.  It's not about being nice, or good.  It's not about salvation.  It's about being shepherded and guided by the master.  It's about being an apprentice. 
From Jesus' perspective, we are all part of God's household business.  We start out as apprentices, learning from the master, who is Jesus.  Jesus is the perfect craftsman in God's workshop - the Michael Jordan of God's business.  We volunteer to become a part of the workshop and serve with the master.  And that's how we learn ... by watching him, listening to him, and by starting to do our chores in the workshop.  As we develop, he gives us increasing responsibility. 
The life of a disciple is simply being a spiritual apprentice under Jesus' tutelage. It's not a digital thing, where one is either "in" or "out" of a club of saved people ... it's more like a school for those getting on the job training. 
At the end of the class we are introduced to the nature of Luke's writings and Luke himself.  This offers us a good perspective on Jesus and his work, so that we can vicariously join Jesus' original disciples and walk with them (and Jesus), and learn as they did.

him,  (30)  saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to
finish.’  (31)  Or what king, going out to encounter another king in
war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten
thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
 (32)  And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a
delegation and asks for terms of peace.  (33)  So therefore, any one
of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

Last week we had a hard hitting sermon about
hating yourself and loving Jesus SO MUCH that in comparison it looks as though
you hate your family.Now scripture is clear that you should absolutely
love your family, in fact scripture talks about that a lot.But you should love JESUS so much that He is
your only consideration.Knowing that true love comes only from God in
the first place. So if your family is to be loved it has to be a love that
comes from Christ.Nonetheless, last weeks sermon was a punch in
the spiritual gut for some of us. That was the warm up for this message this
morning:

cost, and they cover two major areas of living the Christian Life, He talks
about building and warfare, so let’s see what Christ has for us this morning…

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count
the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?  (29)  Otherwise,
when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin
to mock him,  (30)  saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able
to finish.’



Count the cost of building your life on Christ.If you are going to be a Christian, if you are
going to follow Jesus Christ as Lord, then you are building your life on Him.Life, in this sense, can be looked at as a
tower that you build. From the moment you are born the foundation is being
poured.The way your parents raise you.The external influences on you as a child.Who you grow up with and hang out with.What you learn and how you behave as a child…This builds your foundation, this is what the
rest of your life is going to be built on.Then as you grow into a teenager and a young
adult your foundation influences how you build your life, doesn’t it.If you were taught to lie and steal, you build a
life of lying and stealing.If you were neglected, you build a life of
trying to do things on your own.If you were spoiled, you build a life of selfishness.All of these things that happened to you as a
kid, whether good or bad, they influence how you build your life.Everyone has a life story, how they became
who they are today.And some people spend lots of money, time, and
effort trying to reform that foundation that was destroyed for them as a kid…
they go to theory, read self help books, try to retrain their mind and their
ways…But for Christians we get a second chance at
our life story, we get a second chance at that foundation…Because the Christian Life Starts with being
BORN AGAIN!What does that mean? That means our foundation
is re-laid! We have new life, a fresh start a clean slate.And if you a

Given the great lament we presently have over our highly polarized society, I do cringe at the title of our upcoming study for this Sunday. I mean…I hear it, and I realize there is a great deal of pushback and questioning of binary choices in our present world. Plurality has been elevated to a position of unapproachable sanctity that can teeter on the edge of absurdity, if not plunge in altogether. Understand, as it touches our equal and dignified treatment of our fellow human being, a representation of plurality can be an agent of peace.As it touches epistemology, however, we are going to be challenged by the declarations of Scripture. It’s my opinion that true plurality is rare, if not downright mythological. Humans historically tend to be attracted to bias. No matter how piously we claim neutrality, our opinions begin surfacing the longer we communicate with each other.In our study this Sunday Jesus will make a statement that forcefully demands we make a binary choice. We’ll be reading <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=luke+11%3A14-28&version=NLT" target="_blank">Luke 11:14-28</a>. Read the whole passage together, then go back and linger on v23.What are the three distinct reactions towards Jesus stated in v14, 15 and 16? The first is contrasted with the next two, indicating one is positive and the others are negative.What do you make of the “strong man” illustration Jesus uses? Given the context of the miracle that happened, who do you suppose he sees as the strong man, and who is plundering his castle? What might this tell us about Jesus’ mission, and ours by extension? What does it show us about choosing Jesus’ side?V24-26 is an unusual section, to say the least. We’ll examine that in detail on Sunday – but what do you suppose Jesus is trying to convey here? Is this after-care instructions when being delivered from demonic possession…or is there something bigger that Jesus might be addressing especially in light of v23?V28 sums everything up.
