In the genealogies, make note of anything that jumps out at you. Ask God to show you what is important in the text. When you get to 1 Chronicles 13, meditate on the details. Follow cross-references to Exodus 25, Numbers 4, and Leviticus 16, among others. Then move on until you reach 1 Chronicles 15, where you see them successfully bring the ark of God to the City of David. What did David learn? What did you learn? Meditate on an area of your life where you are angry with God because His ways don’t match what seems right to you. Surrender your preferences to Him.

"Where" matters, because places make people, and people matter. Where they live tells us many things about who they are. God's purpose to call out from the world a people for himself began to unfold on a particular part of the world's surface during a particular period of the world's history. That purpose continued unto the Incarnation, which happened in that same part of the world. Almost every one of the Bible's human authors lived in the Holy Land for some period of time. Almost all were Jewish. It is not possible to understand the Bible's people, its meaning, or its message without some knowledge of its historical and geographical setting.  
God revealed Himself in a particular time, to a particular race of people, at a particular geographical location. Just like He did in the times and people of the Scriptures, God wants to speak to us through our own time, work, relationships, and geographical location. But to understand His ways with us, we must understand His ways with them. For that, we must know something of the when and where and through whom it all happened. We must be able to visualize the places, because the people and time and land constitute the arena in which God chose to uniquely speak, act, and intervene.

The word "salvation" is a big, full word, meaning peace, wholeness, (eternal) life, healing, bliss. When we know what salvation is, we understand what Jesus came to do for us, heart, soul, mind, and strength. Full revelation and knowledge of salvation comes from the Word through Scripture and Tradition, according to St. Paul (2 Thess 2:15). 
Isn't one of the first issues anyone confronts when beginning to ready, study, and love the Bible some confusion regarding what it's about?
Understanding the Bible's purpose explains to us why and how we should read it, because a person's approach and expectations have a lot to do with what he or she gets out of Scripture. Ultimately, salvation is about wholeness and healing - heart, soul, mind, and strength - from eternity past, and for all eternity future, beginning now.

As I come to these studies in Second Corinthians, I am impressed anew that our times are getting more and more "Corinthian"; we are approaching the very level of life that the Apostle Paul found in that city. These letters therefore speak very eloquently of our times.

The Ecstasy and the Agony  (2 Corinthians 12:1-10)

This morning we reach those dramatic two words, "The End." We have come to the last of our studies in Second Corinthians and this concludes our series on the Corinthian Epistles. I am scheduled to speak next Sunday, but I am going to speak on another subject. I am going to address the subject, "Are We In The Last Days?" Many people are asking that question, so bring your survival kit with you and we will head for the hills right after the meeting is ended!

Who am I -- Really?  (2 Corinthians 13:5-14)

Reading through Paul's second letter to the church at Corinth makes you aware that this is the most personal and emotional of all his letters. It throbs with a sense of the glories of God's grace.

Visiting Corinth on my recent trip was a moving experience for me. There is very little left standing of the original city -- it was destroyed by the Romans shortly after Paul's visit there and has been lying in ruins ever since. Certain temple columns remain, though. as well as the market place and other public areas of the city. They can be clearly discerned, and the actual pavement of the judgment hall of the Roman proconsul is well preserved.

It wasn't hard for me to imagine the Apostle Paul as he came down from Athens into this city which was at the time a center of pleasure, a great commercial city and a city of great beauty, with many, many temples. It had gained a reputation as the center of lascivious worship -- the worship of the Goddess of Love. There were some 10,000 prostitutes attached to the temple of Aphrodite and the city lived up, or perhaps I should say, down, to its reputation as a place of sensual pleasure. It represented a sex-saturated society. You can see indications of this in Paul's letters to the church there. It was easy to imagine the apostle arriving in the dust of the road unknown and unheralded a simple tentmaker by all appearance. Finding two people of the same trade, Aquila and Priscilla, he lived and worked with them, and preached up and down the city streets and in the market places and synagogues. Thus God used him to lay the foundations of the church at Corinth.
