Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Luke 3:21

Luke 3:21 f. The Baptism of Jesus ( Mark 1:9-1 Kings : *, Matthew 3:13-Esther : *).— Lk. notes that Jesus was praying ( cf. Luke 9:29, Luke 11:1, etc.). In the early Church it was customary immediately after baptism to pray for the gift of the Spirit. Lk. explicitly gives a bodily form to the Spirit, and does not definitely limit the vision to Jesus. Many scholars uphold the reading of Codex Bezæ in Luke 3:22, “ Thou art my Son: I have begotten thee this day” ( cf. Psalms 2:7.) If this be... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Luke 3:21-22

This history of our Saviour’s baptism is reported both by Matthew and Mark, much most largely by Matthew; See Poole on "Matthew 3:13"., &c. Luke only addeth those words, and praying, which teacheth us that prayers ought to be joined with baptism. What was the matter of his prayer we are not told, though the following words incline some not improbably to judge that he prayed for some testimony from heaven concerning him. read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Luke 3:21-38

CRITICAL NOTESLuke 3:21.—This verse seems to imply that the baptism of Jesus was in a measure private—that He was the last to receive the rite on the particular day when He came to John. The reason why He submitted to the rite is given by Himself in Matthew 3:15, viz. that He judged it fitting for Him to conform to all the requirements of the law of Moses. Praying.—This circumstance is mentioned by St. Luke only. It is an illustration of the necessity of prayer to make any external rites... read more

Sermon Bible Commentary - Luke 3:21-22

Luke 3:21-22 Christ's Baptism, a Token of Pentecost. Without all question, there is a deep and mysterious connection between the baptism of our Saviour and the coming of the Holy Ghost upon the Apostles. They are, if we may so speak, parts of the same wonderful work of God, the saving Christian people by the kingdom of heaven. Christ's baptism was the beginning, the coming down of the Holy Ghost on the day of Pentecost was the middle, the baptism of each Christian is, in a certain sense, part... read more

DISCOURSE: 1484THE DESCENT OF THE SPIRIT UPON CHRISTLuke 3:21-22. Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened; and the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.IN every part of our Lord’s history, from his first entrance into the world to his dissolution upon the cross, we observe an astonishing... read more

Chuck Smith Bible Commentary - Luke 3:1-38

Shall we turn to Luke's gospel chapter 3.As Luke begins the third chapter, he is giving you the date of the beginning of the ministry of John the Baptist, and he uses no less than six historic references points to tell you when John began his ministry. It was in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was the governor of Judea, and Herod was the tetrarch ( Luke 3:1 )And the word "tetrarch" means a ruler of a fourth part. And when Herod the Great died, he left the... read more

Sutcliffe's Commentary on the Old and New Testaments - Luke 3:1-38

Luke 3:1 . In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Cæsar. St. Luke begins this chapter in a scientific manner; he speaks as a man of letters, and gives posterity a chronological record. Pontius Pilate had been governor, or as some call him only procurator of Judea, but one or two years, when the word of the Lord came to John. Herod the great, tetrarch of Galilee. From this title it would seem that he held four provinces under his government. Philip, tetrarch of Iturea and Trachonitis; that... read more

Luke 3:21Jesus also being baptized--Meeting of Jesus with JohnThe people, I read, “mused,” wondering if John were the expected Messiah.John, too, mused, we may be sure. “Words! words! words!” at the end of each long sultry day, as he laid him down in some rocky cave what time the sun sank suddenly and the stars hung like balls of fire in the purple sky, and the cry of the wild beast was heard as he stole forth to drink at the fords of the Jordan. ‘ I can baptize them with water. I can tell them... read more

21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, Ver. 21. And praying, the heaven was opened ] Prayer is the key of God’s kingdom, and must be used, as at other times, so especially when we or ours receive the sacraments; though the most, if urged hereto, must say, if they say truly, as 1 Samuel 17:39 , I cannot go with these accoutrements, for I am not accustomed to them. read more
