Psalm 81: 8-14 8Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me; 9There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god. 10I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it. 11But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me. 12So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels. 13Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways! 14I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries. This section of Psalm is a sad tale of a people who would not listen to God. You can hear the pulse beep as God pleads to them to listen. And we each ask “Lord have you been trying to tell me something”? I wonder how many times God has spoken and we were not listening, we were preoccupied. There are valuable lessons to be learned by listening to God. Nothing is more urgent, nothing more necessary, nothing more rewarding than hearing what God has to say. It is clear God still speaks today just as in biblical days, God only wants to be heard. Several reasons God still speaks to us; for one He loves us so much; He loves as much as the people of the old testament and new testament. He wants to develop a love relationship with us and that involves a two party communication. Number two we need God definite deliberate direction for our lives. Number three God speaks because God knows our need for comfort and assurance. Number four God speaks to us because He wants us to know Him. So how does God speak? God speaks through his written word, the Bible; God speaks to us by the Holy Spirit, when a person has been saved they are abiding in Christ filled with the Spirit. God impresses His word, His will, His mind upon them. God impresses from His spirit to our spirit. Number five, God speaks through Godly people and often times they don’t even know it. Number Six, God can speak through the church the body of Christ. Number Seven, God speaks through circumstances it can be through failures or success, disappointments or strategies. What is God trying to communicate when He does speak to us? Well, first off God wants us to comprehend the truth. God wants us to fully understand what He is saying. He wants us to understand the truth about Himself, the truth about his majestic, the truth about His power, the truth about his holiness, so God speaks. God wants us to know the truth about Himself, ourselves, our importance in His plan, about His grace and God wants us to know the truth about other people, our usefulness to God. Now we can either be a passive listener or an aggressive listener. We can just kind of float along or we can grasp God’s word. In Matthew 7:24 we need to understand the importance of hearing and doing what God says. As the story is told about the one who build his house upon the rock or the one who build his house upon the sand. See when God speaks His word we need to take His word and we need to meditate upon it because when we fail to meditate to think upon the word of God the devil comes and steals it away. When the devil steals it away the word of God can not come to fruition in our lives. God wants us to conform to the truth; His son Jesus Christ is truth. When Jesus Christ speaks to us he confronts us with truth, and we will either refuse the truth or yield to the truth. We have to listen to comprehend and we comprehend to be shaped to conform to the image of Jesus Christ. God wants to communicate His truth; God wants us to communicate His truth. God never gives anything for us to keep for ourselves; be it our monies, be it insights, truths; He gives these things to us to give it away. So God still speaks, are you hearing Him when he speaks? Are we aggressively listening to what God is saying? So what has God taught us over the years? Are we delivering and applying the truths on a daily basis? When we comprehend the truth are we conforming our selves to the image of Christ? Are we adjusting our lives to the truth, are we building on the rock or are we building on shifting sand?
