By what Authority Do We Evangelize? by Cecil Peasley By what authority can a Christian witness describe the routine of a western pagan who thinks there is a God but has no idea about whether He is personal or impersonal and is too preoccupied to find out for himself? By what authority may a Christian move into a freezing land and present an image that introduces a way of life that will disrupt the community's entire religious relations, the existing communal system? By what authority do we offer a Jewish man or a Muslim a religious way that might interfere with his economic, political or social life? How can we as Evangelists expect people to commit themselves to a God they cannot see? By what authority do we operate? The only authority is the authority of God who made all men and who wishes that none should perish, but that all should repent and live. The following scriptures underscore this: Leviticus 19:10; John 20:21; Matthew 28:16 – 20 and Acts 4:20. But is it in good taste and good ethics to gain the confidence of a person and then finally tell him he is wrong in every fundament of life? Let us remind ourselves that a medical doctor is often an intruder not by choice but by necessity. He performs his duty of diagnosis and prescription under a very solemn oath. The obligation and pledge of an Evangelist is no less binding than the pledge of a medical doctor, not in the physical but in the spiritual dimension. As Evangelists we are men under Divine Authority, we have a mandate, a duty of love to fulfill. May we never falter or fail in our God entrusted task – till He come.
