(1898-1963) Novelist, poet, Christian apologist and professor at Magdalen College, Oxford from 1925 until 1954. Lewis' conversion from atheism is treated in his autobiography Surprised by Joy. On seven consecutive Tuesdays, from February 22 to April 4, Lewis' pre-recorded talks known as "Beyond Personality" were broadcast over BBC radio and eventually published under the title Mere Christianity. On April 23, 1956 he entered into a civil marriage with Joy Davidman for the purpose of preventing her threatened deportation by British immigration officials and the story is told in the film Shadowlands and A Grief Observed. In December, a bedside marriage was performed in accordance with the rites of the Anglican Church, because Joy's death was thought to be imminent. However, Joy died on July 13, 1960. Lewis died in 1963 at The Kilns (his family residence), one week before his 65th birthday. His most popular novels are Chronicles of Narnia, Perelandra and Out of the Silent Planet. Apologetic works include Miracles, Mere Christianity and his well known The Screwtape Letters.
