Miles J. Stanford

Miles J. Stanford (1914 - 1999)

Was a Christian author best known for his classic collection on spirituality, The Green Letters, published in 1964. Theologically, Stanford called himself Pauline and Dispensationalism. He drew upon the written ministries of William Newell, Lewis Sperry Chafer, and a number of the original Plymouth Brethren, in particular John Nelson Darby.

Because of Stanford's focus upon the doctrinal content of the Pauline Epistles, some evangelicals have erroneously identified him with hyper-dispensationalism. To address this, Stanford published numerous papers during the 1980s and 1990s clarifying the distinctive tenets of "Pauline Dispensationalism." A collection of fourteen papers were collected into his 1993 book of the same name. Stanford typically signed his letters with his hallmark salutation, "Resting in Him."

ON TO MATURITY

"That I may know him" (Philippians 3:10). "The one unchanging factor on this earth is the Word of God. It is upon the written Word, and in the Living Word, that the Christian life is to be established. Yet there are Christians throughout the world who are seeking to get along on the basis of questio... Read More

OUR FATHER, UNTRUSTWORTHY?

"The Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants; and none of them who trust in him shall be desolate" (Psalm 34:22). We can only trust our Father to the degree that we know Him. And He only reveals Himself to us by His means. That is by the Word, by the Spirit, and hence by the Son–in that sequence. "C... Read More

PASSIVE RESISTANCE

"There is, therefore, now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus " (Romans 8:1). Until the believer realizes that his life is safely hid with Christ in God, he will never get free from the harassment of the enemy. "When He giveth quietness, who then can make trouble?" (Job 34:29). "If the L... Read More

PERSONIFICATION

"God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction" (Genesis 41:52). To share what we have may minister temporarily to the physical; but to minister to the spiritual in an eternal way we must share what we are, and that calls for growth in the Lord Jesus Christ. "We can only comfort oth... Read More

PLUS, OR MINUS?

"For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but faith which worketh by love" (Galatians 5:6). Grace + Law = Death. Grace - Law = Life! POSITIONAL CONDUCT

"They who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ" (Romans 5:1 7). "Law and grace are separated by the infinite chasm of the Cross. RECALCITRANT REFORMATION

"Everyone that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness" (Hebrews 5:13). The Reformation, for all of its rise from Rome, to this day has never really gotten off the ground. RECEPTION AND RESISTANCE

"For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works" (Hebrews 4:10). Besides the rest of reception, there is also the rest of resistance. REST AND REJOICE!

"Rejoice in the Lord always!" (Philippians 4:4). Exhaustive effort brings home the necessity of strengthening rest. The believer will not be ready to enter into his spiritual rest until he is utterly worn out by his unsuccessful efforts to conquer sin and the old man. There is no rest for the "wretc... Read More

REST VIA STRUGGLE

"Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28).
