G.V. Wigram

George Vicesimus Wigram was an English biblical scholar and theologian. As a young man George Wigram obtained a commission in the army. One of his postings was to Brussels. He spent one evening exploring the Waterloo battlefield and it was here he had a religious experience that changed his life. This led to him resigning his army commission and in 1826 he entered Queens College, Oxford with the intention of becoming an Anglican clergyman.

At Oxford he met John Nelson Darby and Benjamin Wills Newton. Dissatisfied with the established church, Wigram and his friends left the Anglican church and helped establish non-denominational assemblies which became known as the Plymouth Brethren.

Wigram had a keen interest in the original Hebrew and Greek texts of the Bible, which was of great interest to the emerging Brethren assemblies. In 1839, after years of work and financial investment, he published The Englishman's Greek and English Concordance to the New Testament, followed in 1843 by The Englishman's Hebrew and Chaldee Concordance to the Old Testament.

With Wigram's help, Darby became the most influential personality within the Brethren movement. Wigram is often referred to as being Darby's lieutenant as he firmly supported Darby during moments of crisis. He also helped Darby fend off accusations of heresy, also in regards to the sufferings of Christ, in articles written in 1858 and 1866, which some considered were very similar to Newton's errors two decades earlier.

George Vicesimus Wigram was converted whilst a subaltern officer in the army, and in 1826 entered at Queen's College, Oxford, with the view of taking orders. As an undergraduate he came into contact with Mr. Jarratt of the same college, and with Messrs. James L. Harris and Benjamin Wills Newton, both of Exeter College, who were all destined to take part in the ecclesiastical movement with which Wigram's name is also prominently connected. This connection was strengthened from about the year 1830, when these friends, all Devonians, were associated in the formation of a company of Christians at Plymouth, who separated from the organised churches, and were gathered to the Name alone of Jesus, in view of bearing a testimony to the unity of the church, and to its direction by the Holy Spirit alone, whilst awaiting the second coming of the Lord.

Wigram was active in the initiation of a like testimony in London, where by the year 1838 a considerable number of gatherings were formed on the model of that at Plymouth.

In 1856 he produced a new hymn book, "Hymns for the Poor of the Flock," which for some twenty-five years remained the staple of praise in the meetings with which he was associated. Ten years after the first appearance of the hymn book edited by him he stood by J. N. Darby once again at a critical juncture, when the question of the doctrine maintained by the latter on the sufferings of Christ some further dissension occurred, though the teaching was vindicated. During the rest of his life he paid visits to the West Indies, New Zealand, etc., where his ministry seems to have been much appreciated. He passed away in 1879.

Addresses on the Seven Churches: 8: Philadelphia Lecture 3

REVELATION 3: 7-12. IN the very name of this church the Lord's love to His people is recalled, and there is something peculiarly sweet in this, in their time of difficulty and trial from the evil around. My desire in mentioning a few things is not to bring out new truths, but old truth which God may... Read More

Addresses on the Seven Churches: 9: Laodicea

REVELATION 3: 14, etc. THERE is one thing very helpful to remember in connection with all truth; viz., that as it comes from God, man, as a creature, is unable in himself to hold it. It is a question that often escapes from our minds, that we are powerless not only as sinners but as creatures. Not o... Read More

Extracts from Letters of G. V. W.

"My thoughts are not as your thoughts, nor my ways as your ways," is a grand truth, and how heartily can faith add its "Amen" to the declaration; for how far better are His thoughts than ours! It is good to be in His hand; and surely every way of the Lord as to each of us is the best possible, being... Read More

Lectures on the Epistle to the Ephesians: Lecture 3: Ephesians 3

In the first chapter there were two things especially the apostle wanted these Ephesians to know. First, What was the hope of the calling of the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory? God had so used the brightness of the light of His Son to shine into their souls, that they knew they we... Read More

Three Letters of the Late G. V. Wigram.

My dear -, We naturally look for fruit such as we can present, as it were, on our table before the Lord; but He seeks rather that which can be in His presence on high, and a testimony that will abide through eternity (2 Cor. 2: 14-16). Doubtless, it is sweet to see fruits gathered, and, like grapes ... Read More

The Hope of His Calling

Ephesians 1: 15; 2: 10. "That ye may know what is the hope of His calling." God has called you; what is the hope of the calling? What future is there in this call? We get it in verse 5 -- "Having been predestinated unto the adoption of children." I know "Abba's" heart now; I am to know "Abba's" hous... Read More

Choice Quotes, Part 12

God will not be in the second place, He takes the first place, proclaiming life to the poor sinner through that Son raised from the dead. I am in a scene where God is everything, and I must get out of the way. Ah! how blessed when the soul can say. "Let God have His proper place as God, let Him act,... Read More

The Coming Kingdom: Lecture 2

Revelation 4 - 19: 10. Last week we were occupied with the vision given to John in Patmos. Being in the Spirit, he saw Jesus Christ in the midst of seven golden candlesticks, but with all the glorious insignia of the Ancient of days (yet Son of man) examining the churches. The whole scene was brough... Read More

An Address on Marriage

Heb. 13: 4. One of the marks of the last days is "forbidding to marry" (1 Tim. 4: 3), a mark of that state of things which leads to final judgment. "Marriage is honourable in all." I don't know anything that marks the low state of things in Christendom more than the levity with which marriage is tho... Read More

Food for Believers

THE BELIEVER'S DUTY OF REALIZING THE GLORY OF THE HEAVENLY CALLING IN CHRIST. Ephesians 1, 2. The first of these chapters may be considered under two heads. First, we have the Church presented in fulness of blessing, and conscious of her portion; and also we have the revelation of the power by which... Read More

Choice Quotes, Part 13

The life we make so much of has death in it; death is necessarily connected with the body, but I get rid of it -- Christ left a savour in the grave quite different from the savour of God's wrath. He has made death to a believer to be nothing save being absent from the body to be present with Himself... Read More

Thyatira

Revelation 2: 18. These epistles to the churches are divided into three and four. The first three and the last four go together. The difference is marked by the place of the exhortation: "He that hath ears to hear," etc. This epistle to Thyatira is the first of the last four. In Ephesus we get the f... Read More

The Import of Marriage

Gen. 2: 18-24; Eph. 5: 22, 33. It is an immense sphere if one looks at the scene laid there in the garden, and, on the other hand, at that scene in which the last Adam, life-giving Spirit, will present to Himself a glorious Church, without spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing. It surely is part of th... Read More

Lectures on the Epistle to the Ephesians: Lecture 4: Ephesians 4

Down to the 10th verse of the 2nd chapter, the apostle is looking at the counsels of God to be made good in a people on the earth through that mighty power by which Christ was raised from the dead. From Eph. 2: 11, to the end of Eph. 3, we get him looking at the change that had taken place upon eart... Read More

An Answer of G. V. Wigram

...to "Mr. H. Craik's Letter, dated 15th November, 1848." Notice. I would engage my reader to consider attentively pages 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, of "Remarks, by J. N. Lectures on the Epistle to the Ephesians: Lecture 5: Ephesians 6:10-24

There are three parts in the redemption of Israel out of Egypt. There was, first of all, the making a way through the Red Sea; getting them on the road with God on the other side.
