Valsan Thampu ( - )

Rev. Valson Thampu, who combines wide-ranging experiences in higher education, social action, multi-faith initiatives, media, preaching, research and writing, has been engaged in mainstreaming the Christian presence in India. Leaving the certainties of a coveted job, he plunged into public life a few years ago and has become, in a short span of time, a household name.

A proponent of the “spirituality of seeking,” as against the religiosity of mere compliance, Rev. Valson’s writings are distinguished for their originality of thought and freshness of style. All of his writings are a contemporary response to the words of Jesus, “Cast your net in the deep”.

CHILDREN OBEY

Children are biblically mandated to obey their parents. It is prescribed as an unconditional requirement, except when such obedience conflicts with the duty to obey God. Children are to obey their parents for no other reason than that they are parents. Parental authority does not have to depend on t... Read More

FAMILY AND WORSHIP

Family worship is grossly neglected today. In the scattered and divided life that we lead, especially in the urban context, worship at home is the first casualty and God is crowed out of our personal and family life. Unless forced by situations of desperation or crisis, we rarely turn to God. The se... Read More

FAMILY CULTURE

The age in which we live prefers the typical to the unique. Today conforming to the tastes and ways of the world has become a craze. Media enables the modern materialistic culture to be pervasively invasive. The world is too much with us. And the hedge between our home and the world remains breached... Read More

FAMILY, SICKNESS AND CARING

Sickness is a natural aspect of family life. It is necessary, therefore, that we develop a positive and spiritually sound attitude to sickness and caring. The secular-technological culture sees sickness only in negative terms. It is an evil to be avoided or fought at all costs. More importantly, it ... Read More

GOD'S TIME - MAN'S TIME : WHOSE TIME?

Somewhere deep in the bowels of Hell, Satan convened his demons. "How do we capture the souls of these humans?" he asked them for suggestions. "O Father, of Lies, tell them there is no Heaven", said one. "With no prospect of eternal reward, they'll have no reason to live virtuous lives" "O Master of... Read More

HOSPITALITY

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the manifesto of a spiritual revolution. While the revolutions of the world seek to effect changes by force in the external world, the spiritual revolution of Jesus effects a paradigm shift in human nature with the power of love. HUSBANDS, LOVE YOUR WIVES

Having exhorted wives to shift from resistance to submission, Paul goes on to urge husbands to give up control and gain companionship. They must love their wives. The very fact that it seemed necessary to the Apostle to give this instruction at all proves that it is neither easy nor natural for husb... Read More

JUSTICE TO CHILDREN

It is instructive to examine the general impressions about and attitude to children. To sample adult opinions about having or being with children is to realize how ambivalent we are towards them. We love and hate them. We long for them and feel burdened by them. The general attitude to children is a... Read More

KNOW THIS WOMAN?

“Should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?” [St. Luke 13: 16] Let us, first, take note of the irony in this thought-provoking incident. The woman in question had been a part of her congregation... Read More

PARENTS AND CHILDREN

The spirit of alienation that marks our age has infected the parent-child relationship acutely. This has escalated the tensions and traumas of parenting. Two forces complement each other in this respect. There is, on the one hand, a diminution of parental authority on children. On the other hand, th... Read More

PARENTS BEWARE!

Paul exhorts fathers that they should not, “exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” (Eph. 6: 4). Paul's instruction in this section is rooted in the larger context of the biblical understanding of the relationship between parents and children. T... Read More

WIVES, OBEY YOUR HUSBANDS!

It is significant that Paul addresses wives first. This is not a clever strategy to appease husbands; nor should it be misunderstood as yet another instance of Paul’s male chauvinism! It is, instead, an acknowledgement of the crucial importance of the role of the wife, and by extension also of the m... Read More

YOUTH AND FAITH

Joseph: A Role Model for the Youth We need to reckon three preliminary issues while addressing the relevance of faith to youth.
