There is a great deal of discussion now taking place about the lack of spiritual power in our Christian churches. What about the New Testament patterns" Brethren, the apostolic method was to provide a foundation of good, sound biblical reasons for following the Savior, for our willingness to let the Spirit of God display the great Christian virtues in our lives. That is why we come in faith and rejoicing to the eternal verity of Hebrews 13:8, Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever!" This proclamation gives significance to every other section of teaching and exhortation in the letter to the Hebrews. In this verse is truth that is morally and spiritually dynamic if we will exercise the faith and the will to demonstrate it in our needy world. I think this fact, this truth that Jesus Christ wants to be known in His church as the ever-living, never-changing Lord of all, could bring back again the power and testimony of the early church!

THE ETERNAL VERITY

For Reading and Meditation:      2 Peter 1:1-11It is one thing to accept the faithfulness of God as a clear biblical truth; it is quite another to act upon it. God has given us many great and precious promises, as our text for today puts it, but do we actually count on them being fulfilled? We have to be careful that we do not hold God to promises He has not given. I have seen a good deal of heartache suffered by Christians because someone encouraged them to take a statement from the Word of God, turn it into a "promise," and urged them to believe for it to come to pass. Then, when nothing happened, they became deeply discouraged. One woman told me that many years ago she had taken the words found in Acts 16:31 - "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved - you and your household" - and claimed them as a promise. When her husband and son died unrepentant she was devastated. I pointed out to her that even God cannot save those who don't want to be saved, and that the promise given by Paul and Silas was for the Philippian jailer, not anyone else. There are hundreds of promises that God has given in His Word that we can claim without equivocation. "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (Hebrews 13:5, KJV) is just one among many. Someone who has counted all God's promises in the Bible numbers them as being over 3,000. That ought to be enough to keep you going if you lived to be a hundred. Be careful, however, that it is a general promise you are banking on, not a specific one.Father, I have Your promise that You will guide me into all truth, so my trust is in You that You will give me the wisdom to discern between a promise which is general and one that is specific. Amidst the mutations of character, the fluctuations of time, and the vicissitudes of events, the soul longs for something that does not and that cannot change, to which it may attach itself and thus find compensation for all the mutabilities of which It is compelled to have experience in this world. There needs of course something else besides immutability in order to constitute an object worthy of our earnest attention and heart-felt confidence. We cannot desire immutability where there is anything less than perfection. But where the highest possible excellence resides, there unchangeableness becomes a thing greatly to be desired. Above all when we stand in a certain relation to this incomparable object; when the perfections of this unchangeable one are made available for us; when his power supplements our weakness; his wisdom our, ignorance; when he in all his plenitude of perfection is our own particular treasury from whence we may draw everlasting supplies. Then, Oh, then, let change approach him not, but stand respectfully beyond the circle drawn by his divine nature. How vain were it to go everywhere preaching the gospel of the grace of God, of God's grace incarnate in Christ, if Christ were not the same yesterday, to-day, and forever. Why should we go telling men of what Christ said and did to the leper, of his conversation with the woman of Samaria, of his instructions to his disciples, his rebukes addressed to the Pharisees, his demeanor in the presence of his enemies, his emotion at the grave of Lazarus, his kindness to sinners and publicans, his invitations to the laboring and heavy-laden, his affliction and agony in Gethsemane, his sufferance of indignities in the Praetorian, his prayer on the cross, and his words to the penitent thief; why should we go about telling men these things, if it were not that they occurred in the life of one who is the same yesterday, to-day, and forever? Yes, this gospel is everlasting. It is not an ancient book; but the book of this generation. There is not the least trace of decrepitude about it. It blooms with immortal youth. By means of it Christ this very day approaches you, and reveals feelings that he entertains for you, entertains for you now, will ever entertain. An arch-angelic trump uttering in the skies the words, " Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest," would not be to us any more reliable evidence of the present disposition of Him who sits upon the throne, than these same words in the Gospel afford. And it becomes us to be well aware of this as we peruse the gospel history or dwell upon its statements. Would not some find in their hand a new and wondrous gospel, radiant with a glory hitherto unsuspected, if they would begin to read it with this great truth firmly enthroned in their convictions, that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, to-day, and forever?

Now my days are swifter than a runner; they flee away, they see no good. They pass by like swift ships, like an eagle swooping on its prey. § You carry them away like a flood; they are like a sleep. In the morning they are like grass which grows up: in the morning it flourishes and grows up; in the evening it is cut down and withers. § Man who is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble. He comes forth like a flower and fades away. The world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. § They will perish, but You will endure; yes, they will all grow old like a garment; like a cloak You will change them, and they will be changed.  What is your life? It is even a vapour that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 

The Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. § Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His truth shall be your shield and buckler. God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. The faithful God … keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments. § All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth, to such as keep His covenant and His testimonies. § Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God … who keeps truth forever.

 God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. 

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. § We do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. § He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray. § Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth. Oh, turn to me, and have mercy on me! Give Your strength to Your servant, and save the son of Your maidservant.

 Jesus … was moved with compassion for them. 

This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I set My rainbow in the cloud… And I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth. § [It is] ordered in all things and secure. § That by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have some strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. We declare to you glad tidings—that promise which was made to the fathers. God has fulfilled for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus.  There was a rainbow around the throne,  in appearance like an emerald. 

As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. § There will be a tabernacle for shade in the daytime from the heat, for a place of refuge, and for a shelter from storm and rain. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand… The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore. § The Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

 He spread a cloud for a covering, and fire to give light in the night. 

We finish our years like a sigh. The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. § Here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come. § I am the Lord, I do not change. § Our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself. § The creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope.  Vanity of vanities, all is vanity. 

As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him. § The Lord is gracious and full of compassion … He will ever be mindful of His covenant. He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. § As an eagle stirs up its nest, hovers over its young, spreading out its wings, taking them up, carrying them on its wings, so the Lord alone led him, and there was no foreign god with him. His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. When Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick. § The same yesterday, today, and forever … Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will … Do not fear therefore.

 The Lord is very compassionate and merciful. 

Thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.” § Even to your old age, I am He, and even to gray hairs I will carry you! As an eagle stirs up its nest, hovers over its young, spreading out its wings, taking them up, carrying them on its wings, so the Lord alone led him. § He bore them and carried them all the days of old.
