For Reading and Meditation:      Deuteronomy 7:1-10When the Bible says God is love, it is saying more than that God loves, or that God is loving, or even that God is lovely; it is saying that love is the power behind everything He does - love is not merely one of His attributes but His whole nature. God is not only the Author of loving acts; He is love in the very core of His Being. Our thoughts of God's love must be built on God's revelation about Himself in the Scriptures, not by projecting our own ideas about love on to Him. Let's focus, therefore, on what the Bible has to say about the God who is love. First, God's love is uninfluenced. By that I mean nothing in us can give rise to it and nothing in us can extinguish it. It is "love for nothing," as someone once put it. The love which we humans have for one another is drawn out of us by something in the object of our love. But God's love is not like that; His love is free, spontaneous, and uncaused. The passage before us today makes clear that there is no reason behind the love of God for His people. If you look for a reason you just won't find one. He loves because  He loves. No man or woman can ever explain why God loves us. To "explain" it would require that He loves us for something outside of Himself, and, as we have seen, He loves us for ourselves alone. And that love has its beginning not in us but in Himself. He is love's source as well as its river.O God, what security this gives me to know that Your love for me will never be diminished and never be taken away. Help me reflect on this and draw from it the inspiration I need to walk tall and strong through every day. In Jesus' Name. For Reading and Meditation:      Deuteronomy 7:7-20We move on now to consider another aspect of God's character - His abiding faithfulness. God is utterly trustworthy in all He says and does, and this is the rock-bottom reality on which everything in the universe depends. In an age when so much unfaithfulness abounds, how good it is to realize that we have One who will never let us down, never have to apologise for failing us, and never go back on His Word. Am I speaking to someone who has just discovered unfaithfulness in a marriage partner, or experienced the break-up of a relationship because a person you trusted did not keep their word? It's a sad moment when we get a revelation of the inconsistency of the human heart. But we need to look into our own hearts also, for none of us can claim complete immunity to the sin of unfaithfulness. We may not have broken a contract or violated the marriage covenant but we have been unfaithful to Christ in other ways - to the light and privileges which God has entrusted to us, perhaps. How refreshing it is, then, to read today's text and focus our gaze on the One who is faithful at all times and in all things. We may let Him down but He will never let us down. A chorus I learned as a young Christian comes back to me time and time again when I am tempted to doubt the faithfulness of God: He cannot fail for He is God, He cannot fail, He pledged His Word, He cannot fail, He'll see you through, He cannot fail, He'll answer you.Gracious and loving God, what inspiration it brings to my soul to realize that of all the things You can do, the one thing You can't do is fail. May the reality of this be the pavement on which I tread this day and every day. In Jesus' Name. Not a word failed of any good thing which the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass. § God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments. § He will ever be mindful of His covenant. Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands. The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.

Daily Light on the Daily Path or Daily Light is a Christian daily devotional scripture reading published by Bagster & Sons about 1875. It has been reprinted continually since then. God is faithful and true. He cannot lie or deceive. He cannot go back on His word. He is absolutely trustworthy. Even if some do not believe, yet He remains faithful: He cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13).The Lord Jesus is truth incarnate (John 14:6). The Word of God is sanctifying truth (John 17:17). "Let God be true, but every man a liar" (Romans 3:4).The knowledge that God is faithful and true floods our souls with confidence. We know that His Word cannot fail, that He will do as He has promised (Hebrews 10:23). We know, for instance, that we are eternally secure, because He said that no sheep of His will ever perish (John 10:28). We know that we will never want because He has promised to supply all our needs (Philippians 4:19).God wants His people to be faithful and true. He wants us to be true to our word. He wants us to be dependable in keeping appointments. We should not be given to lies, exaggeration or half-truths. We should be faithful in keeping our promises. Christians, above all people, should be faithful to their marriage vows. They should be faithful in discharging their commitments in the assembly, in business and in the home.How we should praise and thank the Lord for His faithfulness. <div class="center-it mtb10">The faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generations. - Deuteronomy 7:9 </div>You cannot trust a God that has not given you an inkling of His character or disposition, but if He has spoken, then " you know where to have Him." How can a man be encouraged to fly into a refuge unless he is absolutely sure that there is an entrance for him into it, and that, entering, he is safe? And that security is provided in the great thought of God's troth. "Thy faithfulness is like the great mountains." "Who is like unto Thee, O Lord; or to Thy faithfulness round about Thee? " That faithfulness shall be our " shield," not a tiny targe that a man could bear upon his left arm, but the word means the large shield, planted in the ground in front of the soldier, covering him, however hot the fight, and circling him around, like a tower of iron. God is ''faithful" to all the obligations under which He has come by making us. That is what one of the New Testament writers tells us when he speaks about Him as " a faithful Creator." Then, if He has put desires into our hearts, be sure that somewhere there is their satisfaction; and if He has given us needs, be sure that in Him there is the supply; and if He has lodged in us aspirations which make us restless, be sure that if we will turn them to Him, they will be satisfied and we shall be at rest. "He never sends mouths but He sends meat to fill them." " He remembers our frame," and measures His dealings accordingly. When He made me He bound Himself to make it possible that I should be blessed for ever. And He has done it. God is faithful to His word, according to that great saying in the Epistle to the Hebrews, where the writer tells us that by "God's counsel," and " God's oath," " two immutable things," we might have "strong consolation who have fled for refuge to lay hold on the hope set before us." God is faithful to His own past. The more He has done the more He will do. " Thou hast been my help: leave me not, neither forsake me." Therein we present a plea which God Himself will honour. And He is faithful to His own past in a yet wider sense. For all the revelations of His love and of His grace in times that are gone, though they might be miraculous in their form, are permanent in their essence. So one of the psalmists, hundreds of years after the time that Israel was led through the wilderness, sang, " There did we" - of this present generation - "rejoice in Him." What has been, is, and will be, for Thou art " the same yesterday, and today, and for ever." We have no God that lurks in darkness, but one that has come into the light. We have to run, not into a refuge that is built upon a " perhaps," but upon " Verily, verily! I say unto thee." Let us build rock upon rock, and let our faith correspond to the faithfulness of Him that has promised.

In 1604, King James I of England authorized that a new translation of the Bible into English be started. It was finished in 1611, just 85 years after the first translation of the New Testament into English appeared (Tyndale, 1526).
