The old covenant that Israel was under was built around the Mosaic Law that God gave to the Israelites in the wilderness after their Exodus from Egypt. This law was binding until Christ came and ushered in the new covenant, which we are under today. The Jews were devoted to the law and cherished it (cf. Ps. 119:43-48). Under the new covenant, the law is still important in that it expounds on holiness, but we are not bound by it.

This is not just an intellectual, philosophical, or even theological concept to agree with. It is a historical event that one must believe and trust in.

One of the great privileges of the Christian life is our participation in the Lord’s Supper or communion. It is where we, as a body of believers, observe and remember the death of Jesus on the cross. Jesus gave us this in order that we would never forget the sacrifice He made for us. 
Communion is an important part of our walk with Christ. It should never be done in such a way that it loses is significance in our hearts. It should not be seen as just a part of our church service. It should be done, every time, as a memorial of the sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross.

Concern for other people should be a high priority for all Christians. We are called to serve others before ourselves (cf. Phil. 2:3-4). Sacrificial love should be one of the great hallmarks of the church, and people will be able to see our love for the Lord, by the way, we love one another (cf. John 13:35). Sadly, this is not always a real practice with some believers. We still wrestle with sins such as selfishness even after we get saved to the detriment of the church as well as those on the outside who are watching our lives. It is easy to get frustrated with others at times, especially if we feel like someone is holding us back. This week’s lesson reminds us that love is greater than liberty and that it is better to lay down our rights as Christians than to trample on the faith of a brother or sister in the Lord. This is difficult in our individualized society, but it is what Christ calls us to do.

There are no shortcuts to this part of the building project, and the builders must pay close attention to it. 
The church, likewise, must also be built on a firm foundation. God’s ways are not man’s ways. No better example of this can be found than in how Paul describes how God saved the Corinthian believers. 
The Greek culture of Paul’s day boasted in its wisdom. Corinth was no exception. To this day, in fact, people still consider ancient Greece as the cradle of human wisdom and philosophy. As a result of this atmosphere, the believers at Corinth were prone to exalting human wisdom and thus dividing the church. To counter this thinking, Paul reminded them that they had not trusted in human wisdom to be saved. Now they were in danger of trusting in human wisdom instead of the gospel (Bible Expositor and Illuminator Union Gospel Press, Spring Quarter 2022).

In a time when much of modern-day thinking rejects the reality of objective knowledge, it is becoming more difficult for many people to recognize truth when they see it. In fact, the concept of truth has become outdated and old-fashioned to many modern critics of Christianity. 
Jesus Christ stands in direct confrontation with the relativism of today’s societal climate. He not only brought a timeless message of truth to the world; indeed, He is the very embodiment of truth. We cannot deal honestly with the teachings and Person of Jesus while attempting to sidestep the truth. Some things are true, and other things are false. Modern theories aside, some things cannot be refuted. To make matters worse, one of His closest disciples would deny even knowing Him before the night was over. 
We too sometimes face rejection from people, both friend and foe alike. When we are rejected by people, we can turn to Christ because He will never reject those who come to Him in faith and love. You can know that He loves you no matter what kinds of situations you may go through or mistakes you made. We celebrate Christmas by focusing on the birth of the Son of God on earth. It is also possible to look at Christmas from the heavenly point of view. He wants us to seek Him for Himself in love, not just treat Him like a genie in a bottle who appears to give us whatever we wish. 
We can rest assured that God does what He has promised. He does not lie, nor does He fail (Num.23:19; Titus 1:2; Heb. 6:18). We will find our prayer lives much more fulfilling if we seek to align ourselves with God’s will rather than try to talk Him into lining up with our will. God works in His own time, but when the answer comes, we realize that He goes beyond our wildest imagination and exceeds our expectations (cf. Eph 3:20) (Expositor and Illuminator Union Gospel Press, Winter Quarter 2021).

Once we get to December, it seems that Christmas has already arrived at least from the standpoint of the commercial world. In many congregations, December’s arrival heralds the beginning of the Advent season, a time for focusing on the events related to Christ’s birth. Special programs begin to take shape. God’s righteousness is not like human righteousness, which often is adherence to some arbitrary standard of behavior. We who have put our faith in Christ for salvation have been declared positionally righteous. In practice, we should be growing daily in righteousness or conformity to God’s holy standards, as the Holy Spirit works in us through God’s Word.

The Bible never promises that living the Christian life will be easy. God never said that His children will be free from hard times and difficulties. He did say, however, that He will never leave us or forsake us (Heb. 13:5). There are many dark days we must endure, and God expects us to trust Him when we cannot see our own way. We walk by faith, not by sight, and are not to be dismayed by our surroundings. When we are faced with trying circumstances, we must remember that God will make us victorious and that the joy of the Lord is our strength (cf. Ne.8:10).  When we are staring down an enemy that is larger than we are and is threatening to steal everything God has given us, we must remember this: “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
