The 19th Psalm is a psalm that compares God’s Word to the sun. The sun is everything to the natural world and the Word of God is everything to our spiritual world. The natural world would be dark, dead, and fruitless without the sun. And where would you and I be without the brightness, beauty, illumination, and influence of the Word of God?
Psalm 19 says that the Word of God “revives the soul” (v. 7a), “makes wise the simple” (v. 7b), “rejoices the heart” (v. 8a), and “enlightens the eyes” (v. 8b). If you go about your daily life without the light and warmth and illumination of the Holy Scriptures, you are like someone who goes about life without the sun! (How you manage is a complete mystery!)
The Word of the Lord makes our day, our spring, our summer, our life by causing us to bud, ripen, blossom, bloom, and be fruitful! Without the Word of God, we will conclude our vain and fruitless lives in outer darkness and spiritual death. Such is David’s vivid comparison between the sun and the Word of the Lord in Psalm 19.
And so, it is our joy and our delight to proclaim from the rooftops, “SOLA SCRIPTURA! SOLA SCRIPTURA! The Word of God Alone!” How we love Your Word, O Lord! How we depend on it for everything in our lives. It truly is our only rule of faith and practice. Here is the origin of our light, our warmth, our energy- our everything!
Speaking of the Words of God, verse 11 concludes:
By them is your servant warned;
In keeping them there is great reward.
Do you see the twin functions of Scripture here? 1) Scripture is keeping us by its many helpful warnings and 2) the servant of God keeps the Scriptures by obedience, with the end result being “great reward.” That’s our outline for today. Let’s get started!
Welcome, dear friends, to Home Church Langley!
