Deuteronomy 4:41 – 5:22
Cities of Refuge and the 10 Commandments
This study of Deuteronomy highlights how the Law the Jews were given thousands of years ago are still used as a precedent in the American justice system today.
The cities of refuge which are explained in the book of Numbers chapter 35 give way to the principals currently used in today’s justice system.
Convictions based on 2 or 3 witnesses, capital punishment, innocent until proven guilty, are just some of the standards we find in this passage of Scripture. How a people and a nation deal with the manslayer, the unintentional killing, and the avenger of blood are all explained in God’s Word with no room for confusion.
Likewise, the 10 commandments are widely used in a principal way not only in our justice system but also in the way we conduct ourselves morally. There have never been nor ever will be a moral set of commandments for the human race to live by and that has had the global impact on nation’s cultures than what the 10 commandments give. These commandments were etched in stone by God Himself and were given to a free people in that if they desire to remain free without the weight of bondage they must obey them. Sadly, we fail to live by them not only individually in our households but collectively in government’s institutions as well. For that we will reap what we sow and suffer from the sin of disobeying God’s righteous standard.
In this study each of the 10 commandments are thoroughly acknowledged and taught. A commandment kept is our wisdom and understanding. A commandment kept is done in obedience and devotion to our Creator. A commandment kept is how we thoughtfully consider one another in a practical, natural, and spiritual way.
