The Text Readings (formerly known as “Day Texts”) are usually anywhere from 15-60 minutes. This show involves the translation and meaning of Exodus 4:1-12. Here God gives Moses three signs which he can use to convince Israel Jah is with Moses. But Moses lacks faith because of his speaking limitations. Jah recognizes this and both corrects and assists Moses as he returns to Egypt. The translations are from the Hebrew (H) and Greek (G) texts.
(H) 4:1 But Moses began to answer and to say, “Now consider this: What if they do not believe me, and what if they do not pay attention at the sound of my voice? For they will say, ‘Jaho(h)-ah has not appeared to you.’”
(G) 4:1 But Moyses answered and said, “What, then, if they neither believe me nor listen to my voice? For they will say, ‘God [Jaho(h)-ah] has not appeared to you.’ What will I say to them?”
(H) 4:2 Then Jaho(h)-ah began to say to him, “What is this in your hand?” So Moses said, “A staff.”
(G) 4:2 But Lord [Jaho(h)-ah] said to him, “What is this, the thing in your hand?” Moyses said, “A staff.”
(H) 4:3 He said to Moses, “Throw it on the ground.” So Moses started to throw it on the ground and it became a snake. Then Moses got away from the snake’s face.
(G) 4:3 He said to Moyses, “Throw it on the ground.” So Moyses threw the staff upon the ground and it became a serpent, and Moyses fled from it.
(H) 4:4 But Jaho(h)-ah said to Moses, “Send forth your hand and grasp at its tail.” So Moses sent forth his hand and he grabbed at it, and it became a staff in his hand.
(G) 4:4 Then Lord [Jaho(h)-ah] said to Moyses, “Stretch forth your hand and take hold of the tail.” Therefore, Moyses stretched forth his hand to take hold of the tail and it became a staff in his hand.
(H) 4:5 “This is so they might believe Jaho(h)-ah has appeared to you, God of their fathers, God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob.”
(G) 4:5 “This is so they may believe you, that Lord [Jaho(h)-ah] has appeared to you, the God of their fathers, God of Abraam, God of Isaak, and God of Iakob.”
(H) 4:6 Then Jaho(h)-ah again started to speak to him, “Now bring your hand in by your chest.” So Moses brought his hand in by his chest. When he brought it forth yet again, behold! his hand became leprous like snow.
(G) 4:6 Then Lord [Jaho(h)-ah] spoke to him again, “Bring your hand in close to your chest.” So Moyses brought his hand in close to his chest. Then he brought his hand away from his chest, and his hand became like snow.
(H) 4:7 Then he said, “Return your hand to your chest.” So he returned his hand to his chest. But as he brought his hand forth from his chest then, behold! it had returned; his hand was like normal flesh.
(G) 4:7 Then he again said, “Return your hand to your chest.” So he brought his hand back into his chest. Then he brought forth his hand from his chest and, once more, it returned to the color [or, “the appearance”] of his flesh.
(H) 4:8 [Jaho(h)-ah said,] “This is what will happen: If they do not believe in you and if they do not listen to the voice of the first sign, then they will believe in the voice of the second sign.
(G) 4:8 [Lord Jaho(h)-ah then said,] “So if ever they might not believe you, not even after they heard the voice of the first sign, they will believe you because of the voice of the second [or, ‘the last’] sign.
(H) 4:9 This also will happen: If they do not believe, not even in these two signs, and if they will not listen to your voice, then you must take from the water of the river and you must pour the water on the ground. Then the water which you will take from the river will become, indeed, it must become blood on the ground.”
(G) 4:9 It will also be that if they do not believe you according to these two signs, nor listen to your voice, you will take from the water of the river and you will pour it upon the dry ground. Then the water which you should take from the river will become blood upon the dry ground.”
