God Provides (Genesis 24:1-17)
1) First Thoughts
a. When asking for directions, your confidence in the directions depend on your confidence in the person giving those directions. We can trust God to lead us down the right paths.
2) Understand the Context
a. Abraham instructs a servant to go back to Haran to find a wife for Isaac. The servant paused at a well to pray. God answered the prayer and led him to Rebekah.
3) Explore the Text
a. The Assignment (24:1-9)
i. We should consider wisely the future of our children.
ii. Communicate our unwavering commitment to follow God’s purposes/plan.
iii. Make your plans with a mixture of humility (recognize your own imperfect ability to read God’s plan) and absolute confidence in God.
b. The Prayer (24:10-14)
i. The first thing is to pray.
ii. Be as specific as you can.
iii. Ask God for evidence of His leadership in the matter.
iv. God will lead us to the right place at the right moment.
v. We can trust His provision in our lives as we follow His path.
c. The Answer (24:15-17)
i. Notice – God’s provision met man’s need at that well on that day, i.e., God always meets your needs (versus “wants”) at the right time.
ii. “a virgin” – suggesting strong character and spiritual compatibility for marriage.
4) In My Context/Memory Verse:
a. Through prayer, we can seek God’s direction and understand His purposes.
b. God answers honest and sincere prayer in ways that are consistent with His plan and purpose.
