June 19th, 2022: God's Restored People Shall Prosper

“And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me” (Isaiah 49:23).

I. THE PROMISE OF ISRAEL’S RESTORATION (Isaiah 49:18-21)
When God swears by Himself, we can expect whatever He promises to come to pass (Isaiah 49:18).
The LORD can replace whatever our enemies take from us and also remove them from our presence (Isaiah 49:19).

If we are in God’s will, He will bless us in ways we would never expect (Isaiah 49:20-21)

II. ISRAEL’S RESTORATION EXPLAINED (Isaiah 49:22-23)
God can turn our enemies into our friends (Isaiah 49:22)It is nothing for God to put us in charge of those who once ruled us (Isaiah 49:23).

This week’s lesson revealed that although the Babylonian Captivity had not yet taken place, God had already provided for Israel’s deliverance. Not only did He provide for their deliverance, He would use Gentiles to help His people return to Zion, or Jerusalem. And when they returned, God also promised that they would prosper, for kings and queens would bow before them.

A lot of what Isaiah prophesied is still future, but we can rest assured that God will bring it all to pass, and when He does, just as He declared, the world will “know that I am the LORD.”

Victory and Restoration
Servant Messiah idol worship, the oppression of the poor for personal gain, and business practices that fundamentally threatened God’s Law
Isaiah’s calling was to serve as God’s messenger before the people of Judah and proclaim their sinful behavior. Later in his ministry, the prophet insisted that his prophecies be recorded for future generations: “Go now, write it on a tablet…that it may be an everlasting witness. For these are rebellious people, deceitful children, children unwilling to listen to the LORD’S instruction” (Isaiah 30:8-13).

In Isaiah 49:1-12, God through Isaiah foretold the redemption of Israel from Babylonian Captivity as well as a call for Israel to sing and rejoice because God had comforted His people

The things that Isaiah prophesied in this text were so unbelievable that when they happened, God said that Jerusalem and her inhabitants would without a doubt “know that I am the LORD.” No human or anything, especially false gods could cause these events to take place, much less predict centuries earlier that they would.

Only “the LORD,” Jehovah could do it! In the last part of this verse, God said “for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.”

The word “ashamed” here can mean “disappointed.” God was saying that anyone who “waits” or hopes expectantly for Him will not be disappointed. Of course, anyone who has ever waited on the LORD to intervene in their situations knows that waiting is not easy; it takes faith. But if we “wait” or hope patiently, we can rest assured that God’s will for us will be done, and it will be right and good (see Psalms 37:5-7; 40:1-3), just as it will be for Jerusalem.
