John shows us that all of humanity belongs in one of two groups; the children of God and the children of the devil. To be born of God is to receive a new nature with a whole new way of living in which we practice righteousness and love others. God who is love, loves us and places His own life in us, so we can be vessels that express His love in the world. This love isn't primarily a feeling but an action. It is the selfless, sacrificial giving of ourselves for the benefit of others. Since He makes us righteous by His perfect sacrifice it is only natural that we would practice righteousness.
