PASTOR TIM's NOTES:

Genesis 49:1-12
The Blessing of Jacob
Part 1
1. Jacob’s last words are PROPHETIC.
Vs. 1-2
1a. Jacob’s PROPHETIC words are for the Last Day.
what shall befall you in the last days:
Num 24:14-17, Isa 2:2-4, Ezek 38:16, Hos 3:5
2. The PROSPECT of a first born son failed all expectations.
Vs. 3-4
2a. The PROSPECTS of this 1st born seemed bright.
Then everything changes as Rueben failed all expectation.
4 Unstable as water, you shall not excel,
2b. The PROSPECTS of this 1st born failed because of a great sin.
Vs. 4b Because you went up to your father's bed;
2c. The PROPHECY has a present day application.
Based on what he says to Reuben we know that in Israel's future it will be filled
with immorality. Has this been a problem for Israel?
3. The PUNISHMENT of Simeon and Levi was based on their anger.
Vs. 5-7
3a. The PUNISHMENT of Simeon and Levi is based on killing the men of Shechem.
3b. The PUNISHMENT and prediction will be division within Israel.
Both tribes were divided and scattered, so that neither of them were given a
portion of the land. Joshua 19:1-9
No land given to Levites. Joshua 13 and 14.
3c. The PROPHECY has a present day application.
When we look at the prediction about the next two sons, Simeon and Levi, we
notice their anger.
The prediction is that uncontrolled anger will result in a loss of possessions.
6 Let not my soul enter their council;
You don’t want to be taking advice from an angry person.
Vs.6b Let not my honor be united to their assembly;
In another words don't be around them; these men that have uncontrollable anger.
Prov 22:24-25
4. There is PRAISE and PREDICTIONS concerning Judah.
Vs. 8-12
4a. Judah will be PRAISED because of his transformation.
4b. The Lion of Judah is PREDICTED to be the Messiah.
7 aspects of the Messiah coming are mentioned.
1) The Messiah will be PRAISED. vs.8
Notice that all Israel will praise him one day.
2) The PREEMINENCE of the Messiah over his enemies. Vs. 8
The Jewish people certainly have struggled with their enemies.
But we know that one day the Messiah, Jesus, will come again a second
time and set up his kingdom.
3) The PICTURE of the Messiah as a Lion. Vs. 9
4) The PLACE of Messiah as ruler. Vs. 10
View 1
This view presents the need for the Messiah to come before the Jewish people, as
a nation, lose their right to rule themselves as lawgivers.
Around 6-7 AD Herod Archelaus was dethroned and the first Roman Procurator
took over. His name was Caponius.
During his reign he takes away the right to capital punishment as prescribed in the
Mosaic Law.
The 2nd View
The Messiah will sit on the throne with the scepter.
Therefore, this is speaking of the Messiah's rule during the millennial reign.

Ps 60:7
Isa 33:22
One day Jesus will return and he will make all the laws and all of the rules and he
will reign.
5) The PALM Sunday entrance with a Donkey and a Colt. Vs.11
Of course this was in fulfillment also of Zachariah 9:9.
Ps 118:22-28
6) The PROMISE of the coming Messiah’s wrath.
Notice the rest of verse 11.
He washed his garments in wine,
And his clothes in the blood of grapes.

Isa 63:1-4
7) The POSITION that the Messiah will have as Judge.
In verse 12 we see the aftermath of his return in a time of judgment.
Here Jacob predicts events of the LAST DAYS. The occasion was the blessing of his sons. And
with each prophecy concerning the Messiah the predictions begin to narrow the field of who the
Messiah could be.
