Psalm 86:13 For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.

The mercy of God, made available to us through the blood of Jesus, is what delivers us from the grave, death, darkness.... hell.

Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

When Jesus saves us, we are brought into his kingdom, though on the earth physically, we are in heavenly places with him spiritually. But prior to his coming, to us receiving him, the spiritual location of people was hell.

He pulled us out of that pit (Matt 12:11), he pulled us out of the grave (Matt 27:53), he pulled us from that place of darkness (John 12:46).

Know this: Ecclesiastes 11:3 .....in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be. (Also see Rev 22:11)
i.e. wherever you are spiritually when your physical life ends, there will you dwell. Either in Life, Heaven (Jesus) or absent from him (death, Hell).
