Children are a blessing from God. And when most young couples get married, it is desired that children be one of the products of this union. Yet tragedy can strike and for various reasons children cannot be had. And while sad, in our culture, there aren't any real physical or legal ramifications for a couple who doesn't have children. However, in the culture on ancient Israel, having no children could lead to poverty if the husband dies before his wife, for inheritance would be passed down via children thus meaning the wife was not necessarily entitled to her husband's estate. What was a woman to do in this situation? That's where the practice of Levitate marriage came in. What was Levirate marriage under the Law of Moses? In Lesson 75 of our study of Deuteronomy we learn the answer to this question.
