The Incredible Journey

Throughout his gospel, Mark highlights how much opposition Jesus received throughout his ministry. And it’s the same at the cross. Mark has already mentioned that the disciples had run for their lives, and we know that John was the only one of their number there. Interestingly, however, Mark doesn’t mention John. Instead, Mark makes a point of highlighting some very important people who were there to support Jesus. 
 
Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary, the mother of James the Younger and of Joseph, and Salome. In Galilee, these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there. – Mark 15:30-41 
 
This is an honour roll of faithful discipleship. It’s significant that Mark doesn’t mention the young apostle John, who was actually there. The only ones he mentions as being at the cross are the women. These are faithful women who had followed Jesus and cared for his needs all the way from his ministry in Galilee, and Mark notes that there were many of them there. It wasn’t just 12 men who followed Jesus. For Mark to have honoured these women in this way, within the context of his culture and time, points to their remarkable courage in being present at the cross. 
 
Mark singles out two of them for particular honour by naming them: Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Younger and Joseph, and Salome.The attribute that’s highlighted of the women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and who were there at the cross was that they cared for Jesus’ needs. It took courage for these two women named Mary to be there at the crucifixion.

191. The Women at the Cross – Mark 15:30-41

Joseph of Arimathea, a leading member of the Sanhedrin has sought an audience with Pontius Pilate to request the body of Jesus. For many reasons, this was a highly unusual request. 
 
Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. – Mark 15:25-26 
 
The reason why Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead was because he would have expected Jesus to have lasted days upon the cross, as was usually the case. In fact, Pilate couldn’t believe it, so he summoned the centurion for confirmation. You see, Pilate didn’t understand that it wasn’t the might of Rome that had killed Jesus at all! He didn’t understand that Jesus had given his life as an act of his own self-will. Pilate didn’t understand that Jesus’ sufferings at the place of execution hadn’t been principally physical but spiritual. 
 
He didn’t understand that there at the cross, atonement had been made for the sin of the world. Pilate, you see, deals only at the level of the physical. The centurion absolutely confirmed that Jesus was dead, because he had asked one of his squad to thrust a spear through his side and into his heart after his death. And so, Pilate let Joseph have the body. The fact that he did so speaks of Joseph of Arimathea’s exceptionally high standing. Normally, not even the family was permitted to take the body. 
 
Pilate asked for proof that Jesus had died. And Pilate had no idea of the monumental spiritual achievement that Jesus had just made at the Cross. We live in an age of scientific materialism in which we need 100% proof for anything otherwise we just won’t believe.

My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?

Mark 15:33-39 reports the supreme moment of all redemptive history, when Jesus Christ the Son of God on the cross bore the sins of sinners and thereby satisfied the righteous wrath of God the Father against those sins. However, we naturally ask what in the world was happening in the spiritual realms when Jesus uttered the last words we would expect to hear from the mouth of the Son of God: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” The answer to this question is that God in that moment, out of his immense and steadfast love, was delivering his people from his eternal judgment through the sin-bearing and wrath-bearing sacrifice of Jesus the Son of God on the cross. And the equally glorious reality is that God, through the cross, was not only delivering sinners from his wrath, but he was delivering us to nothing less than to himself! 
 
A. Three words of caution concerning our understanding of Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross 
1. A caution from the doctrine of the Trinity 
2. A caution from the doctrine of the union of a fully human and a fully divine nature in Jesus 
3. A caution from the infinite love for and delight of the Father in the Son 
 
B. Three hints at the meaning of the cry of forsakenness in v. 34 
1. A hint from the Garden of Gethsemane prayer (Mark 14:36; cf. Jeremiah 25:15-16) 
2. a hint from the descent of darkness from noon to 3:00 p.m. (v. 33; cf. Amos 5:18; 8:9-10) 
3. a hint from the cry itself (v. 34; cf. Psalm 22:1) 
 
C. Two applications of Jesus’ suffering of forsakenness 
1. to the lives of unbelievers, from v. 39 (cf. Mark 1:1) 
2. to the lives of believers, from v. 38 (cf. 1 Peter 3:18)
