God Delivers Peter (Acts 12:1-19)

The Greek word "Pascha" can either be translated as "Passover" or "Easter". This video will show why the word "Easter" is the only true way to translate this word in Acts 12:4.

And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church. — Acts 12:4-5 
 
This is just a little bit overkill for King Agrippa. Four squads would be a total of sixteen soldiers assigned to one man who had done nothing violent. Remember that’s sixteen men to watch one pretty peaceful man for one night. Four soldiers were assigned to him at a time and never left his presence. Two guarded the entrance to his cell and two were chained to him at all times. And they rotated posts every six hours. 
 
Yet it’s that last line that going to outdo anything that King Agrippa can do. 
 
“But earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church.” 
 
In tomorrow’s devotional, we are going to see the results of this “earnest prayer.” But let not skip past the note that there are believers battling it out in prayer for one man — Peter. And you should know, the theme of persistent prayer through persecution continues through the book of Acts. First, persecution. Second, prayer. Third, salvation. And then it repeats, again, and again.  
 
So are you presently living imprisoned by a hopeless situation and shackled by impossible odds? If so, why are you trying to handle it on your own? Stop that. Get honest. Get open. Get vulnerable. And ask someone to pray for you. Shoot, I will pray for you. Hit that “Need Prayer” button on my website. If you want relief there is only one way to get the relief you need. And it’s not by doing it all yourself. It's by asking the only One who might be able to help you. God. 
 
ASK THIS: What situation are you trying to handle on your own right now? And who do you need to ask to pray? 
 
DO THIS: Ask them for prayer. 
 
PRAY THIS: God, forgive me for trying to handle this on my own. Work a miracle through the friend I ask to pray for me.

Numbers Are No Match | Devotional | Acts 12:4-5

Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his hands. And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” And he went out and followed him. He did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel left him. When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.” — Acts 12:6-11 
 
So this is an interesting story. What I find especially interesting is Peter is in an unbelievably deep sleep. This guy is out. And he is so deep in sleep that when the angel shows up, and has to kick him in the side to get him to wake up. And then when he does wake up, he is still so incognizant he thinks he is dreaming. 
 
Now, I don’t know about you, but I will let you know that there is just about no way I would be able to go to sleep in a situation like this. Peter is doing something I would not be able to do. This man is about to face horrific capital punishment. One of his closest compadres, James, was just beheaded. And at the moment, Peter is shackled between two men, which by the way, is not exactly the way I would want to spend my last night on earth. There is no way he will last even one meeting with the vengeance of King Agrippa, who, by the way, is elated that Jewish religious leaders like what he is doing with Christians. And yet, at this moment, Peter is dead asleep.  
 
And my question is, how in the living world is Peter able to fall asleep in this situation? 
 
Well, I actually think there is a possible answer to this question. You see, during Jesus’s earthly ministry, Peter received a couple of very specific predictions from Jesus. The most famous was a prediction about Peter's denial of knowing Jesus. And while Peter denied that prediction, it came to pass only moments later and exactly as Jesus predicted. In the same way, Jesus made another prediction to Peter. It was about how Peter would one day die. Jesus said this is John 21 
 
Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.” — John 21:18-19 
 
Now that’s pretty specific! 
 
So let me interject a thought here as a guy who struggles with anxiety and sleep. In the moments that I am most anxious, I have found it best to preach to myself the promises of God. I do this by first finding a story in the Bible that relates to my situation. Then second, I seek out the promise in that story that relates to my present situation. And third, I commit that promise to memory and preach it to myself throughout the day. 
 
I actually wonder if this is what Peter did? If Peter repeated Jesus’s promised prediction to himself over and over until he finally fell to sleep in the belief of the promise over the despair of the situation? I actually wonder if he fell to sleep to this thought: 
 
“This ain't the end! Jesus said it wouldn't be like this. He promised I would be old and pushed around in a wheelchair by people I don't like to places I don't want to go!"

7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists. 
 
Peter felt like a prisoner… well he was in jail. But God set an angel, setting Peter free. But at that point, Peter was still a prisoner! He had to rise up and get himself out of there! 
 
Often, we feel like prisoners. But God has already set us free. So now its on us to rise up and take ahold of all that God has for us. Too often, we fall asleep on the job. We become content with our lot in life. We look at the mountain and decide we’re fine just camping out at the base. But when you wake up and rise up, the chains fall off!

12 When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying. 13 And when he knocked at the door of the gateway, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer. 14 Recognizing Peter's voice, in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate. 15 They said to her, “You are out of your mind.” But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “It is his angel!” 16 But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed. 17 But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Tell these things to James and to the brothers.” ... 18 Now when day came, there was no little disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter. 19 And after Herod searched for him and did not find him, he examined the sentries and ordered that they should be put to death ... 
 
The Death of Herod 
20 Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon ... 21 On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. 22 And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” 23 Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.

Right after Pentecost, Peter as thrown into prison. People prayed without ceasing for him and God intervened. Why do we act surprised when God answers our prayers? If we call on the name of Jesus, the deliverance is ours. If we are afraid, we must trust in the Lord, commit our way and He will begin to work it out.

Earnest Prayer - Acts 12:5

1 During this same time, King Herod began to do harm to some of those who were part of the church. 
2 He ordered James, the brother of John, to be killed with a sword. 
3 Herod saw that many of the Jews liked this, so he decided to arrest Peter too. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread. 
4 He arrested Peter and put him in jail, where he was guarded by a group of 16 soldiers. Herod planned to bring Peter before the people, but he wanted to wait until after the Passover festival. 
5 So Peter was kept in jail, but the church was constantly praying to God for him. 
Peter Is Led Out of the Jail 
6 One night, Peter, bound with two chains, was sleeping between two of the soldiers. More soldiers were guarding the door of the jail. Herod was planning to bring Peter out before the people the next day. 
7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord was standing there, and the room was filled with light. The angel tapped Peter on the side and woke him up. The angel said, “Hurry, get up!” The chains fell off Peter’s hands. 
8 The angel said, “Get dressed and put on your sandals.” Peter did as he was told. Then the angel said, “Put on your coat and follow me.” 
9 So the angel went out and Peter followed. He did not know if the angel was really doing this. He thought he might be seeing a vision. 
10 Peter and the angel went past the first guard and the second guard. Then they came to the iron gate that separated them from the city. The gate opened for them by itself. After they went through the gate and walked about a block, the angel suddenly left. 
11 Peter realized then what had happened. He thought, “Now I know that the Lord really sent his angel to me. He rescued me from Herod and from everything those Jews thought would happen to me.” 
12 When Peter realized this, he went to the home of Mary, the mother of John, who was also called Mark. Many people were gathered there and were praying. 
13 Peter knocked on the outside door. A servant girl named Rhoda came to answer it. 
14 She recognized Peter’s voice, and she was very happy. She even forgot to open the door. She ran inside and told the group, “Peter is at the door!” 
15 The believers said to her, “You are crazy!” But she continued to say that it was true. So they said, “It must be Peter’s angel.” 
16 But Peter continued to knock. When the believers opened the door, they saw him. They were amazed. 
17 Peter made a sign with his hand to tell them to be quiet. He explained to them how the Lord led him out of the jail. He said, “Tell James and the other brothers what happened.” Then he left and went to another place. 
18 The next day the soldiers were very upset. They wondered what happened to Peter. 
19 Herod looked everywhere for him but could not find him. So he questioned the guards and then ordered that they be killed. 
 
The Death of Herod Agrippa 
Later, Herod moved from Judea. He went to the city of Caesarea and stayed there a while. 
20 Herod was very angry with the people from the cities of Tyre and Sidon. But these cities needed food from his country, so a group of them came to ask him for peace. They were able to get Blastus, the king’s personal servant, on their side. 
 
21 Herod decided on a day to meet with them. On that day he was wearing a beautiful royal robe. He sat on his throne and made a speech to the people. 
22 The people shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not a man!” 
23 Herod did not give the glory to God. So an angel of the Lord caused him to get sick. He was eaten by worms inside him, and he died. 
 
24 The message of God was spreading, reaching more and more people.

I used to be a death metal singer living in rebellion against God filled with anger, getting drunk, and doing what I wanted. Many people attack the King James Bible and say it is filled with errors. One of the most common attacks is the translation of the word "Easter" in Acts 12:4. Most modern versions translate the Greek word there pascha as "Passover", but why did the KJV translators choose Easter instead? 
 
Many people say the word Easter derives it's name from a pagan goddess named Eostre, but the evidence for this is slim to none. 
 
This does not mean we should partake of the pagan bunnies and eggs springtime fertility festivities. This is simply about the etymology of the word Easter. 
 
Many believers that try to defend the KJV are doing so with zeal not according to knowledge in repeating what Sam Gipp has written in his Answer Book about Easter. His argument is refuted in this teaching, but the KJV is still defended as being without error.
