This verse is one of the most significant verses in this chapter, if not one of the top five of this book. This single sentence gives us an inside look at what is behind Paul's drive as a man. Three hidden beliefs that are fueling his motivation. The first belief is that the intrinsic value of this life is not something to be held in high regard. I believe Paul says this because of what he had seen at the beginning of his Christian life — the resurrected Jesus. Remember when we began reading the book of Acts, we said the central message of Acts is the resurrection. The resurrection is where this letter begins, it's what instigated the change in Paul, and it is the one thing that Paul preached every time he entered a city. And we see here that he believes it. He believes in the resurrection so much that his life has less value to him. He understands that the resurrection is not just something that happened to Jesus, but something that will happen to him. And because he knows his death and resurrection are imminent, his present life has less or decreasing value to him, other than being a vehicle to speed the advancement of the message of the resurrection. The second belief that fuels Paul's motivation is the unique calling God gave him. He is resolute in the conviction that God has called him to be the minister of the gospel to the Gentiles to persuade some of the Jews. And as we have learned through Acts, Paul has been faithful and been more adamant about his ministry as time went on. The third belief that fuels his motivation is his personal experience with the grace of God. You see, Paul did not deserve the grace that God extended to him. That's why it's called grace. In fact, Paul deserved punishment for his sin. He had tried works-based religious practices and even made a life of it as a Pharisee. And he was pretty successful at works-based religious practices. Until he met with the justice of God on the road to Damascus and discovered grace-based living, and this is what fueled Paul. Not his good works, or the lack thereof, but the grace that daily gave way to a life of obedience. 
 
So what do we learn? 
 
Three actions drive successful men. They fix their eyes on Jesus. They live out their specific calling. They receive his grace. And then they do it day after day after day until they can look back and say I have run the race, and I have finished the course. 
 
Press on. 
 
ASK THIS: Which of the three actions do you need to give a little more attention to today? 
 
DO THIS: Act on that need. 
 
PRAY THIS: God, I want my life to be meaningful and successful. Help me to know the secrets Paul learned here.

What does it mean that the Apostle Paul declared “the whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:27), and how can ministers do this today?

What is the “whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:27)?

Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. — Acts 20:28-31 
 
Paul's goal at this moment is to communicate to the leaders in Ephesus that he is not going to be able to come to their aid any longer and that they need to bear their responsibility. And what is interesting is that he is speaking both to them and seven other men from a few different churches who happen to be traveling with him. 
 
And Paul tells them to pay attention to some items. Five items in all: 
 
Pay attention to yourselves. 
Pay attention to the members. 
Pay attention to your leadership. 
Pay attention to outside teachers. 
Pay attention to inside teachers. 
 
Paul's point is clear — pay attention. 
 
But it's the way he implores them to pay attention that is far more interesting to me in this text. He begins by imploring them to pay attention to their individual self with the perspective that they are vessels of the Holy Spirit owned by God and purchased by him. His point is that their stewardship responsibility does not come from Paul but God alone, who bought them, owns them, and indwells them with His Spirit and gives them the responsibility to care for these five items. 
 
And this is weighty. And I think Paul has carried this burden to some degree for them, but now he needs them to carry the total weight of the burden themselves. As he hands them the burden, he wants them to know he is not handing them the burden to steward for him. Instead, he is handing them the burden to steward for God. 
 
You know, something spectacular happens in a follower's life when they discover the stewardship principle Paul is teaching here. They discover that everything we have in this life belongs to God. That God owns it all, and everything we "have" or "purchase" or "own" is merely on loan from God. When a follower discovers this, his worldview is radically changed. And if he can learn to live daily with this worldview at the front of his mind, then the way he lives is fundamentally shaped by a God who owns all things. Therefore he leads, spends, talks, and acts as if things in this life, and even his own life, are on loan from God. 
 
So pay attention today. Pay attention to how you lead yourselves and others. But embrace this stewardship mindset. And watch if you don't speak and act differently throughout the day. 
 
ASK THIS: Where in your life do you need to give attention to the stewardship mindset? 
 
DO THIS: See yourself as God's steward. 
 
PRAY THIS: God, I recognize today I own nothing, and you own it all.

Pay Attention To Your Stewardship Mindset | Devotional | Acts 20:28-31

And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me. — Acts 20:22-23 
 
There are so many lines of this speech that are worth talking about. This one illustrates something essential. That the Spirit does not always lead us where we want to go but may need to go. Sometimes he leads us right into apparent anxiety and affliction, which is in direct contrast with the health and prosperity we want from life. 
 
Remember Paul, who we formerly knew as Saul, was at the apex of his career in Jerusalem just 30 years prior. At the time, he was on the fast track to becoming one of the great religious leaders of the day until Jesus hijacked everything on that road to Damascus. By visibly seeing the resurrected Christ, Paul was changed. And now indwelled by the Spirit, he preached about this resurrection and now was compelled to return Jerusalem — a place that held many mixed memories for Paul. And this return meant stepping into a potentially harmful situation. 
 
Some of you today are walking into a potentially harmful situation. And you know it. You are being called to address an employer, coworker, spouse, relative, or even a child. And for you, this situation might be tense. You don't know how it will turn out, but you are compelled to deal with it because it cannot continue any longer. And while you are apprehensive about stepping into this, know this — you are not alone. The Spirit of God lives in you. And that's all you need — supernatural help when you cannot do it on your own. So today, as you address this matter, lean on the Spirit even more than you ever have before. Discover the supernatural leading and power of the Holy Spirit, for he is all the health and prosperity that you need. 
 
ASK THIS: Where do you need supernatural help today? 
 
DO THIS: Trust more in the Spirit than ever before. 
 
PRAY THIS: God, as I believe the Spirit lives in me, increase my trust in you and let your Spirit do the work I cannot do.

How To Take That Challenging Next Step | Devotional | Acts 20:22-23

And now, behold, I know that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again. Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all, for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. — Acts 20:25-27 
 
This is not just a statement of absolution to the leaders in Ephesus but a statement of completion. Paul is stating that he has held fast to the plan given to him by God. He has lived without a single regret. And even now, in this last meeting with these men, he is reminded that the potential for regret was there. He could have strayed from God's plan for his life and ministry. 
 
We need spiritual leaders like Paul today. Men who look dead in the face of personal sins, political pressures, public prejudices, perpetuated propaganda, and pending persecution who still hold fast to living as God has called them to live regardless of the personal cost. We do not need more men who get to the end of life with a list of regrets. Regrets about how they wished they would have behaved and spoken. This is not Paul. And this should not be us. And yet Paul had some regrets. He had regrets about how he formerly lived. But Paul made a decision, a resolute decision to live on mission and without regret. And you can do that too. 
 
But how do we do this? How do we live life without regret? Here is what I think Paul would say to us given his words here. Here are five admonitions I think Paul would give to us: 
 
Listen to God's Plan A. 
Count the cost of doing Plan A. 
Don't count the cost of doing Plan A, and then devise a Plan B because you will end up doing Plan B. 
If you have a Plan B, burn it. 
Do Plan A promptly, and in the way God would want. 
 
That's how you live life without regret. So go live it today. 
 
ASK THIS: Which one on the list do you need to do today? (Share below #1, #2, #3, #4, or #5) 
 
DO THIS: Address that item and live today without regret. 
 
PRAY THIS: God, take my regrets off the table. Please help me to live resolutely.

The Trip From Troas to Miletus 
13 We went on ahead of Paul and sailed for the city of Assos, planning to meet him there. This is what he told us to do because he wanted to go by land. 
14 When he caught up with us at Assos, we took him on board, and we all sailed to Mitylene. 
15 The next day, we sailed away from there and came to a place near the island of Chios. Then the next day, we sailed to the island of Samos. A day later, we came to the city of Miletus. 
16 Paul had already decided not to stop at Ephesus. He did not want to stay too long in Asia. He was hurrying because he wanted to be in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost if possible. 
Paul Speaks to the Elders From Ephesus 
17 In Miletus Paul sent a message back to Ephesus, telling the elders of the church in Ephesus to come to him. 
18 When they came, Paul said to them, “You know about my life from the first day I came to Asia. You know the way I lived all the time I was with you. 
19 The Jews planned things against me, and this gave me much trouble. But you know that I always served the Lord, sometimes with tears. I never thought about myself first 
 20 I always did what was best for you. I told you the Good News about Jesus in public before the people and also taught in your homes. 
21 I told everyone—Jewish and non-Jewish people—to change and turn to God. I told them all to believe in our Lord Jesus. 
22 “But now I must obey the Spirit and go to Jerusalem. I don’t know what will happen to me there. 
 23 I know only that in every city the Holy Spirit tells me that troubles and even jail wait for me. 
24 I don’t care about my own life. The most important thing is that I finish my work. I want to finish the work that the Lord Jesus gave me to do—to tell people the Good News about God’s grace. 
25 “And now listen to me. I know that none of you will ever see me again. All the time I was with you, I told you the Good News about God’s kingdom. 
26 So today I can tell you one thing that I am sure of: God will not blame me if some of you are not saved. 
27 I can say this because I know that I told you everything that God wants you to know. 28 Be careful for yourselves and for all the people God has given you. The Holy Spirit gave you the work of caring for[a] this flock.[b] You must be shepherds to the church of God,[c] the people he bought with his own blood.[d] 
 29 I know that after I leave, some men will come into your group. They will be like wild wolves and will try to destroy the flock. 
 30 Also, men from your own group will begin to teach things that are wrong. They will lead some of the Lord’s followers away from the truth to follow them. 
31 So be careful! And always remember what I did during the three years I was with you. I never stopped reminding each one of you how you should live, counseling you day and night and crying over you. 
32 “Now I am putting you in God’s care. I am depending on the message about his grace to make you strong. That message is able to give you the blessings that God gives to all his holy people. 
 33 When I was with you, I never wanted anyone’s money or fine clothes. 
 34 You know that I always worked to take care of my own needs and the needs of the people who were with me. 
35 I always showed you that you should work just as I did and help people who are weak. I taught you to remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘You will have a greater blessing when you give than when you receive.’” 
36 When Paul finished speaking, he knelt down, and they all prayed together. 
 37-38 They cried and cried. They were especially sad because Paul had said they would never see him again. They hugged him and kissed him. Then they went with him to the ship to say goodbye.

Acts 20:13-38 - Paul’s Farewell to Ephesian Elders

"Stillwater Bible Church began in September 2012 with over 40 believers who were seeking a fresh start. They shared a desire to be taught the Bible and to reach the city of Stillwater, the surrounding communities, and the world for Christ. The first gathering was held on Wednesday, September 12th in a large metal barn west of Stillwater. The warmth of that September evening was matched only by the warmth of Christian fellowship shared by those in attendance. Everything was new. My name is Ethan Smith. I believe the Lord saved my soul for real in 2009 after living a life of sin. I grew up as a Baptist but became reformed in soteriology Sept. 2010 after testing its theology with Scripture and praying about it with an open-mind. I was baptized in 2014 at Cubao Reformed Baptist Church but later became a "Reformed Presbyterian" in 2017.

The Trinity is the foundation of the Christian faith. There is no gospel or salvation without the Triune God of Scripture. It was the Father who graciously chose who will be saved, the Son who died in their place for their sins, and the Holy Spirit who draws them to persevering repentance and faith. Ungodly men are justified by faith alone (Romans 4:1-9) resulting always in good works (Ephesians 2:10).

Trinity Apologetics

INC has changed the verse to say "Church of Christ" instead of "Church of God" in deliberate attempt to uplift their theological bias. This is disrespectful to the Word of God and is adding and subtracting from the Bible. There are ZERO Greek manuscripts of Acts 20:28 that say church of Christ. Some say "church of the Lord" but NONE say what INC wants it to say. They have not only deliberately removed the Deity of Christ evidence from the verse but changed it so their name can be intruded into the words of Scripture. There is no Bible verse that contains INC's name and therefore they're a false church by their own standard.

WITHOUT ONE PLEA EXCEPT THY BLOOD WAS SHED FOR ME....I have been affectionately called THE UNTWISTED SISTER bc I specialize and untwisting verses ppl use OUT OF CONTEXT TO CONDEMN anyone trusting in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. Does Acts 20:32 mean that if a person doesn't LIVE HOLY ENOUGH won't get to heaven? Isn't that what Paul is saying? IS this really a PROOF TEXT FOR LORDSHIP SALVATION? Let's let the Bible define what this means and if a person can MERIT Holiness (in the sight of God) by how they live. We will look at Positional and practical sanctification as the term is used in scripture and what this verse means in its proper context. Note: instructions to already saved people are not the means in which a person GETS SAVED. I pray this lifts you up bc it is GRACE that encourages and inspires you to live Godly lives separate and have a different mindset from the world...not legalism.
