After the uproar ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, and after encouraging them, he said farewell and departed for Macedonia. When he had gone through those regions and had given them much encouragement, he came to Greece. There he spent three months, and when a plot was made against him by the Jews as he was about to set sail for Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia. — Acts 20:1-3 
 
So after more than two years, Paul decides to leave Ephesus. And in this text, we get a very short summary by Dr. Luke about what happens next. If you want to read the fuller context, you need to read 2 Corinthians chapters 1-7. Remember, the book of Acts gives us a flyover, but if you want to look at what is going on in these churches that Paul visits, all you need to do is read their respective letters. 
 
But to give you a quick look, here is a summary of what is happening in Acts 20:1-3. 
 
Paul leaves Ephesus. He travels to the region of Macedonia. He is hoping to meet up with Titus, who was at Corinth. Right now, the Corinthian church was having all kinds of issues, which is why Paul wrote a letter to them entitled 1 Corinthians. In this letter, Paul instructs them on addressing these matters, and Titus is there to help. As Paul leaves Ephesus, he stops at Troas and does some ministry there, hoping to meet up with Titus and hear the report. But Titus doesn't show up. So Paul travels further into Macedonia, probably Philippi, hoping to run into him. And he does finally connect with Titus. Titus communicates to Paul that the issues in Corinth had been dealt with and reconciled. But somewhere during this time, Paul writes 2 Corinthians, a letter he sent to them before he came. As we know, Paul did arrive at Corinth. He stays there for three months, which in this text, he references when he talks about visiting regions of "Greece." This would be his last visit to Corinth. And guess what Paul did during these three months there. He wrote the letter to the Romans. Easily the greatest book he ever wrote. And guess what, all this happens in 3 verses here. That's a lot of stuff. That's a lot of ministry that happens in three short and cryptic verses. 
 
I think we sometimes underestimate the power, impact, and consequence of daily obedience. Don't we? We fail to see how God uses the daily actions of listening and following him to involve us in a strategy that reaches way beyond our life. This is because we have such a myopic view of life. This is because we don't see the same way God sees. It even appears here that Dr. Luke skips over some significant events as he recounts history. In three verses here, Paul went from Ephesus, Troas, Philippi, to Corinth. He met up with Titus and many other men along the way. In addition, he wrote at least two books during this time 2 Corinthians and Romans. Which, by the way, are letters we read even today and continue to impact the lives of people around the world. 
 
So today here is my message to you. If you feel a little unaccomplished and frustrated, I know how you feel. I actually think Paul knows how you feel. I think he was a little frustrated with the church in Corinth. I know this by the way he wrote the letters that he wrote to them. And you may need to hear today. It's okay to feel this way. It's okay to feel frustrated and unaccomplished. But in this feeling, don't do this. Don't stop being obedient. Just be obedient in your frustration. If you have a frustrating marriage, a frustrating job, or a frustrating child, don't let feelings of frustration deter you. Be obedient. Because you may discover one day that during your time of frustration, God was doing more through your daily actions of obedience than you thought he was. And you may look up one day to discover that God was impacting the world around you in a way that you could not see. 
 
ASK THIS: What is your frustration? 
 
DO THIS: Be obedient. 
 
PRAY THIS: God, I give my frustrations to you. Help me to be obedient in these frustrations and feelings.

What To Do When You Are Frustrated | Devotional | Acts 20:1-3

Sopater the Berean, son of Pyrrhus, accompanied him; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy; and the Asians, Tychicus and Trophimus. These went on ahead and were waiting for us at Troas, but we sailed away from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days we came to them at Troas, where we stayed for seven days. — Acts 20:4-6 
 
Now, this may look like a random list of men. But it's not. It is seven strategic men traveling with Paul from three different areas. Sopater, Aristarchus, and Secundus were three representatives from Macedonian churches. Gaius and Timothy were two representatives from southern Galatian churches. Tychicus and Trophimus were two representatives from Asian churches. And the reason they were traveling with Paul, the eighth man of the group, was because Paul had a large amount of money he was bringing to the church in Jerusalem. 
 
There are two great lessons here for men. 
 
First, men need other men for protection from external enemies. We need protection because there are always those who want to oppose us. There are predators out there who seek to inflict harm on men who travel alone. Yet when we travel together, external threats are minimized — not eliminated, but definitely diminished. Second, men need other men for protection from internal enemies. The true enemy we all fight is born in the heart of man. It is not always external, as if it never happens to the follower. Selfishness and sin can find their way even into a devout believer's heart. But when we have other traveling compansions around us, we have men to help us meditate and redirect our selfishness and sin, hopefully before it becomes an external threat. 
 
Paul does something here we should all do. He takes positive, proactive spiritual action by putting himself in the company of other men to protect himself from both of these threats — internal and external. 
 
So today, if you don't have a Christian traveling companion in this life, you need to get one. I would address this immediately. And here is a step you could take. Take another brother, you know, out to lunch this week. Pay for his meal and pick his brain for some advice in an area that is presently challenging for you. And discover the value of brotherhood. One that protects you from the enemy without and the enemy within. 
 
ASK THIS: Who is someone you could take to lunch this week that you could learn from? 
 
DO THIS: Set up a meeting. 
 
PRAY THIS: God, I confess I have been doing life alone. And I am living unprotected. Bring a divine relationship of protection into my life.

Paul Goes to Macedonia and Greece 
1 When the trouble stopped, Paul invited the Lord’s followers to come visit him. After encouraging them, he told them goodbye and left for Macedonia. 
2 On his way through Macedonia he had many words of encouragement for the followers in various places. Then he went to Greece 
3 and stayed there three months. 
Paul was ready to sail for Syria, but some Jews were planning something against him. So he decided to go back through Macedonia to Syria. 
4 These men were traveling with him: Sopater, the son of Pyrrhus, from the city of Berea; Aristarchus and Secundus, from the city of Thessalonica; Gaius, from the city of Derbe; Timothy; and two men from Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus. 
 5 These men went first, ahead of Paul. They waited for us in the city of Troas. 
 6 We sailed from the city of Philippi after the Festival of Unleavened Bread. We met these men in Troas five days later and stayed there seven days. 
Paul’s Last Visit to Troas 
7 On Sunday[a] we all met together to eat the Lord’s Supper.[b] Paul talked to the group. Because he was planning to leave the next day, he continued talking until midnight. 
8 We were all together in a room upstairs, and there were many lights in the room. 
9 There was a young man named Eutychus sitting in the window. Paul continued talking, and Eutychus became very, very sleepy. Finally, he went to sleep and fell out of the window. He fell to the ground from the third floor. When the people went down and lifted him up, he was dead. 
10 Paul went down to where Eutychus was, knelt down beside him, and put his arms around him. He said to the other believers, “Don’t worry. He is alive now.” 
11 Then Paul went upstairs again, broke off some pieces of bread and ate. He spoke to them a long time. It was early morning when he finished, and then he left. 
12 The Lord’s followers took Eutychus home alive, and they were all greatly comforted. 
Eutychus became very sleepy. Finally, he went to sleep and fell out of the window. He fell to the ground from the third floor. When the people went down and lifted him up, he was dead.

Personal Ministry and sacrifice | (Acts 6:8-28:31) | January 31, 2021 | 10 AM

Bible Time with Mark & Cori began as our personal Bible reading time together. As we continued to read and study together, the Lord began nudging us toward sharing our daily Bible time with the faithful community that He has been building up around us.

We stepped out in obedience, and Bible Time with Mark & Cori was born. Inviting our faithful friends to join us on this journey has become the most special time of our day. We are not theologians or teachers, we are simply lovers of Christ who want to learn more about Him and make Him #1 in our lives.

Being intentional about our time with the Lord has opened our hearts to His Word and His leading in our personal lives as well as the direction He desires for our business. It has been humbling and inspiring to have a front row seat to what God is doing in the lives of our friends as well. To say that this has been transformational is an understatement!

Does Acts 20:7 prove that the first century believers were worshipping on Sunday instead of Saturday? 
 
***The purpose of the Re-Examine series is to provide a rebuttal to common arguments that one might have when first introduced to the Hebrew Roots/Messianic Movement/Torah obedient walk. Please read the chapter or book discussed here and prayerfully consider the ideas presented.*** 
 
This verse is used by some to support the idea that Paul and the other disciples were gathering on Sunday as a day of worship, in addition to or in place of the Saturday Sabbath. 
 
There are 3 reasons that this argument falls short: 
The disciples met together daily according to Acts 2:46. 
So, it is not particularly significant in regards to this argument that they were breaking bread or listening to Paul preach on any certain day. 
According to God's word, the “first day” of the week actually begins Saturday evening at sunset. First century believers understood that a day is counted from sunset to sunset. 
As we can see from the creation account in Genesis, it is the evening that separates the day. 
According to many verses in Leviticus, the ritually unclean became clean again in the evening. 
So if this was the first day of the week, one interpretation could be that they were meeting at someone's home for a meal after having been to the synagogue on the Sabbath. 
However, there is a much stronger reason why this verse does not imply a Sunday gathering. Notice that the word “day” is not actually present in the Greek. This is why it is italicized in the KJV. 
So we see that it actually says “the first of the week”. The translators inserted the word “day” to add clarity to the phrase. 
If we look deeper into the original language, the phrase in Greek literally reads “the first of the weeks”. This does not seem to make sense, which explains why the translation reads the way that it does. 
However, when we apply a holistic understanding of the Bible and the immediate context of the verse, we find that neither the word “day” nor the singular of “week” is needed to make sense of the phrase “the first of the weeks”. 
There are 2 things to understand, 
The word “week” is the same as the word for “Sabbath” in Greek. 
The word can mean either depending on how it is used. 
The Feast of Weeks 
Pentecost is the Hebrew festival of Shavuot or “Weeks” in English. Pentecost is exactly 50 days from the day after the Sabbath following the Passover, which is where the name Pentecost comes from (“Penta” meaning 5). To arrive at the 50th day, God commanded that the Israelites count seven Sabbaths. The day after the seventh Sabbath would be the 50th day, the Feast of Weeks. 
From the context we understand that v7 took place between the week of Passover/Unleavened Bread (v6) and Pentecost (v16). 
So from the context of the verse, “the first of the weeks” does not require any changes (“week”) or additions (“day”) to make sense. They were simply meeting on the first Sabbath in the counting to the feast of Pentecost.
