FREEDOM LOVE, AND FAITH. As Peter Scholtes (1938-2009) directed his South Side Chicago youth choir in the 1960s, he wanted a song that would unite the varied experiences of his church’s youth group. After a day of work, Scholtes composed “They’ll Know We are Christians.” The song now made popular by numerous hymnals, reflected the sentiment of Jesus’ teaching that “ all men[will] know that ye are my disciples if you have love one to another. 
While believers might be free from the demands of the law. {ai; taught the Galatians that such freedom requires active love for others. 
Showing this love is the litmus test for a believer’s love for God Self examination regarding love is prudent for followers of Jesus. Does anything prevent or distract from your expression of love to God and others? Might your own definition of freedom stand in the way of love?

Paul is concerned for these churches in the area of Galatia because some teachers have come from Jerusalem telling them that if they want to be true followers of Jesus they need to take on the aspects of Judaism. They need to become circumcised, they need to observe all the Jewish feasts and they need to come under the Law. 
Paul was not just upset with these teachers; he was amazed because the church started going along with the program. He’s writing to get them back on course, saying that these men are distorting the gospel of Christ and that if anyone preaches a different gospel, let him be accursed. Paul is hot! 
He then goes into great depth explaining the difference between the Old Testament Law and the gospel of Jesus Christ. 
No one is justified by the works of the Law, Paul wrote, we are justified by faith in Christ. In other words, a sinner is not made right with God because he’s done some righteous things. Frankly, God is not impressed. “The righteousness of man is like filthy rags before God,” the prophet Isaiah wrote. 
The notion that someone can be made right with God by doing some righteous things has several problems. First, God doesn’t just keep track of the few good things a person does; He keeps track of everything. Can you imagine someone following you around with a clipboard and writing down everything you’ve ever done or said or thought? And then can you imagine that your relationship to God is based upon what’s written on the clipboard? That’s not such an encouraging thought. 
The problem is that God is holy and that clipboard has recorded some things that are frankly quite embarrassing. A lot of people actually believe that their standing before God is based on what’s written on that clipboard. They believe all their deeds are placed on a scale; the bad things on one side, the good things on the other side. “Let’s see, I’ve told three lies and four truths, that puts me on the plus side. I stole something two times, but I didn’t steal something seven times; man, I’m really doing well.” No, God doesn’t compare the good to the bad, he compares all of it, the entire clipboard, to His own holiness. 
If you have a perfectly white dress how many stains would it take before we say that the dress is stained? Only one. Once the dress is stained, how do you remove it?

Christian liberty is incompatible with legalism. 
I. THE GALATIANS WERE CALLED TO REMAIN IN LIBERTY (Galatians 5:1-6) 
1. We must guard the freedom that Christ gives us so that our old ways won’t enslave us (Galatians 5:1). 
2. No one can be saved by tradition, rituals, or customs (Galatians 5:2-4; Romans 10:9). 
3. Since righteousness is an attribute of God, our goal should be to be like Him (Galatians 5:5; I John 3:2). 
4. Love unifies the body of Christ and overcomes obstacles, breaks barriers and creates opportunities for service (Galatians 5:6; Matthew 22:38-39; II Timothy 1:7). 
II. THE THREAT TO THE GALATIANS’ LIBERTY (Galatian 5:7-12) 
5. If we remain firmly rooted in God’s Word, deceivers and false teachers can’t sway us with foolish notions (Galatians 5:7-10). 
6. The church should give no place to those who contradict Scripture (Galatians 5:12). 
III. THE PROPER USE OF LIBERTY (Galatians 5:13-15) 
7. Each of us can fulfill the law by loving one another (Galatians 5:13-15). 
Judaizers, who were teaching that faith in Jesus Christ was not enough for salvation were confusing Christians in Galatia. According to these false teachers, believers also had to be circumcised and keep the law. In this week’s lesson text, Paul strongly warned his readers against reverting to the old system as a means to salvation. He urged them to continue in the liberty that they had received through Jesus Christ. Circumcision and the Mosaic Law are not issues for most Christians today. However, teaching still abounds that implies or suggests that we must do something to make ourselves worthy of salvation. We must remember that Christ’s work for us is complete and that salvation comes only by grace through faith. Thank God for His free gift!
