30 DAY BIBLE READING CHALLENGE (JOHN 12:12 - ACTS 13:43)

At Hope Bible Church we believe that the King James Bible is the inspired and preserved word of God (2 Tim. 3:16) and that "rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Tim. 2:15) is the key to understanding the Bible. All scripture is for us, but it was not all written to and about us. To rightly divide the word of truth is to recognize and consistently maintain the clear divisions that God put in the scripture. The main division in the word of God is between the prophetic kingdom program of Israel (concerns that which was spoken by the prophets since the world began, Acts 3:21) and the mystery program of the Body of Christ (concerns that which was kept secret since the world began until it was revealed through the apostle Paul, Rom. 16:25). Christ chose Paul to be the pattern and spokesman for the Body of Christ to follow in this present dispensation of grace (1 Cor. 4:16-17; 11:1; Phil. 4:9; 1 Tim. 1:12-16).

Dr. Steven R. Cook is a Christian educator. He is protestant, conservative, and dispensational. Studies in the original languages of Scripture, ancient history, and systematic theology have been the foundation for Steven’s teaching and writing ministry. In Acts 7:1-53, Stephen delivers a powerful message concerning Israel's history, and is martyred for his testimony to the truth. 
 
The religious leadership in Israel regarded the Jewish temple as a perpetual holy place and the Law of Moses the final word from God. Any suggestion that the Jewish temple or the Law of Moses would come to an end or be altered was regarded as blasphemy worthy of death. Stephen points out that God chose Abraham to be the father of Israel nearly 650 years before Moses and the Law was given (ca. 1446/5 B.C.), and God worked through His people for hundreds of years (who worshipped at the portable Tabernacle) before the temple was built under Solomon (ca. 960-920 B.C.). The message of Stephen was: 
 
1. Moses was not the final word from God (Deut. 18:15, 18; cf. John 1:15-17). 
2. The Jewish temple did not confine God (Isa. 66:1-2; cf. John 4:20-24; 1 Cor. 3:16). 
3. His accusers were guilty of killing God's Righteous Servant, Jesus Christ (Acts 7:51-53). 
 
Summary of Acts 7:1-53: 
 
1. The Central Idea of the Text is that Stephen gives a defense of his Christian ministry by showing from the OT Scriptures that Moses' Law was not the final revelation from God, that the presence of God was not confined to the Jewish temple, and that Israel's leadership was guilty of rejecting and killing God's righteous Servant, Jesus Christ. 
 
2. Stephen revealed that Israel had a long history of rejecting and persecuting God's chosen leaders, citing Joseph, Moses and finally, Jesus. Most of the religious Israelites of Stephen's day portrayed themselves as the keepers and defenders of the Mosaic Law, yet they actually perverted it to protect their place of religious authority and were willing to destroy God's true servants when their self-interest and theological presuppositions were threatened (cf. Matt. 23:29-39). God never approves of sin, and it is an automatic defeat when those who claim to represent Him and His Law resort to sinful actions in order to protect it. 
 
3. Stephens's message is a selective overview of Israel's history (recalled from memory), starting with Abraham and moving down to Jesus Christ, observing God's sovereign hand working in every detail to accomplish His will. Stephen thought and spoke within a biblical worldview, seeing God at work in the details of men's lives (i.e. an open universe). Stephen personally saw himself in the historical flow of God's plan, and could therefore see himself speaking and acting for God. Likewise, the believer today who lives in the biblical worldview develops a personal sense of destiny, seeing his life as part of the fabric of God's eternal plan that is being worked out moment by moment in the everyday details of human history. The circumstances of our lives are not accidents, but divine appointments, designed by God to grow us spiritually and to advance His eternal plan for His glory. 
 
4. Many in the church today have the false notion that God is found in the building where they gather, as though the place itself is holy and warrants a proper dress or behavior. The Scripture teaches that the Christian's body is the temple of the Lord (1 Cor. 3:16; 2 Cor. 6:16). Christian fellowship and worship is not confined to a place, and the believer is free to worship God as much in a beautiful cathedral as by a mountain stream. Buildings are important to the function of a local church, as facilities facilitate ministry and are the place where activities often occur; however, as necessary as buildings and activities are, the maturing believer is primarily concerned with advancing spiritually through the study and application of God's word and through sacrificial service to others.

Grace Bible Church exists because of God, by God, and for God. Eager to know God as He reveals Himself through His Word, we focus on a Biblical Vision of God by:

David Martyn Lloyd-Jones (20 December 1899 – 1 March 1981) was a Welsh Protestant minister, preacher and medical doctor who was influential in the Reformed wing of the British evangelical movement in the 20th century. For almost 30 years, he was the minister of Westminster Chapel in London.

The world makes claims such as religion is only for the weak or that belief in God is irrational and sub-scientific. These claims and many more flow from modern science, philosophy, and even false theologies that repudiate the God of traditional Christianity and the Bible. In the words of the modern person: “God is dead.” Listen to the sermon “A Hope for All” as Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones uses Acts 7:30 to explain how this belief system is born out of sinful rebellion against God and his law. It is not a sign of an enlightened mind, but of a mind enslaved to sin and depravity. This slavery to sin accounts for the opposition to God and the rejection of His gospel. This is seen in how the world addresses evil and depravity. The world tries to solve its problems through legislation, education, and social programs, but these efforts can never solve the real issue of sin. God uses the law to expose sin, but it is His Son who gave his life for sins, so that the world could be redeemed. This is the power of the gospel. It is not social reform, but cosmic renewal in the power of his Son, Jesus Christ.
