John saw “the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God” (Rev. 21:2). The source and nature of the city is heavenly. According to verse 21:1 the new creation consists of the new heaven and the new earth. Since New Jerusalem comes “out of heaven” it is on earth.

God is the source of New Jerusalem. It is “the city which has the foundations, whose Architect and Builder is God.” God in Christ in His believers is the Builder.

The city is divine and heavenly in nature. Compared to the Old Testament shadows, it is “the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made by hands, that is, not of this creation” (Heb. 9:11). It is “not of this world” (Heb. 9:1)!

As emphasized in posts early this year, because New Jerusalem is heavenly (Heb. 12:22) and not of the old creation, it should not be thought about with any concept from the old creation. Do not consider its size, materials, structure, gates, street, or any other aspect by comparison to earthly cities of the old creation! We need a vision in spirit!

Rather than thinking about what New Jerusalem might be like, let us exercise our spirit to “come forward with boldness to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace for timely help” (Heb. 4:16).
