“And the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.’ And so the name of that place is called Gilgal to this day.” – Joshua 5:9
In the face of imminent battle, Joshua receives an unexpected command from God: circumcise the Israelites. In the eyes of the world, this directive seems nonsensical, a hindrance when urgency calls for action. But obedience was the test. Despite the risks, the Israelites obeyed, and God honored their faith.
There are moments when God’s commands seem untimely, even counterintuitive. Yet, therein lies the test of our faithfulness. It’s not merely about understanding God’s ways but about trusting in them completely. When David faced Goliath, he discarded the king’s armor, choosing instead to rely on God’s unconventional provision: five smooth stones.
Our human efforts, even when at their best, don’t always align with God’s plan. Obedience, however, surpasses expertise or experience. It’s the cornerstone of our relationship with Him. Joshua exemplified immediate obedience, recognizing that God’s ways transcend human logic.
We often ask, “Why obedience?” The answer lies in recognizing God’s goodness and His desire for our best. Our trust in Him must exceed our understanding. Even in moments of uncertainty, choosing obedience leads to a deeper understanding of His will.
Joshua 5:11-12 reminds us of God’s provision. Sometimes, He sustains us miraculously; other times, He blesses the work of our hands. Gratitude in both situations is key. Every moment holds a reason to be thankful; it’s a matter of perspective and a heart tuned to gratitude.
In Joshua 5:14, Joshua queries the divine warrior: “Are you for us or for our enemies?” The answer, “Neither,” redirects our focus. It echoes Abraham Lincoln’s sentiment: It’s not about God being on our side but about us being on God’s side. Our alignment with His heart, His will, is paramount.
Holiness, the core of this narrative, is victory. It precedes triumph in any battle. Reflect on your own holiness—your purity and alignment with God’s will. It’s the armor that ensures success in the wars we face.
As we navigate life’s battles, let’s seek not just to be vessels for God, but vessels made pure through obedience. In hardships and trials, God shapes us into instruments fit for His purpose.
Remember, God’s directives may not always align with our expectations, but they always lead to our ultimate good. Trusting and obeying Him completely paves the way for a deeper understanding of His will and a victorious life in Him.
