In this message, we dive deep into the story of a sinful woman forgiven by Jesus from Luke 7:36-50. Known as the account of the woman who anointed Jesus' feet with her tears and perfume at the house of Simon the Pharisee, this passage reveals profound truths about repentance, forgiveness, shame, grace, and extravagant love. Likely a notorious sinner, possibly a prostitute, she approaches Jesus in brokenness and humility. Despite her past and the judgment of religious leaders like Simon, she believes Jesus can forgive her sins. Her actions of weeping, washing His feet with tears, wiping them with her hair, kissing them, and anointing them with costly ointment demonstrate a heart transformed by faith and gratitude. 
 
Drawing from Psalm 51:17, the message emphasizes that God desires a broken and contrite spirit when we come to Him with our shame. God dwells with the humble and revives the contrite (Isaiah 57:15). This woman's approach contrasts sharply with self-righteous religion, as illustrated by Jesus' parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector—true forgiveness comes not from outward religious acts, but from humble acknowledgment of sin and crying out for mercy. We all sin and fall short of God's glory (Romans 3:23 and Isaiah 53:6—“All we like sheep have gone astray”). No one is exempt from shame or the need for forgiveness. Yet Jesus, who forgave sins openly (as seen in the paralytic lowered through the roof), offers grace to anyone who believes.

Although we exist on the horizontal (earth), the Bible encourages us to have our minds set on the vertical (heaven). Believers in Jesus are called to have an eternal perspective: to “put off” the old, sinful ways and to “put on” the new, godly traits of Christ. Among all the godly traits Paul tells us to “put on,” there is one trait that we are told to do as Christ has done for us. Pastor Gary shares about this one trait—among the other lessons of Colossians 3—in today’s study titled, “Vertical Living in a Horizontal World.”
