Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Proverbs 7:1

"This chapter describes the way of an adulteress, contrasting with Proverbs 8 which sets forth the way of wisdom. It features an eye-witness account of the seduction of a young man by an adulteress. The account is realistic and needs only brief interpretation."[1]"It is the fearful desolation which adultery causes that does not allow the author of Proverbs to abandon this theme which he has already discussed again and again. Here he reiterates the warning once more, reinforcing it with an... read more

A REALISTIC PICTURE OF HOW IT HAPPENED"For at the window of my houseI looked forth through my lattice; And I beheld among the simple ones,I discerned among the youths,A young man void of understanding,Passing through the street near her corner; And he went the way to her house,In the twilight, in the evening of the day,In the middle of the night and in the darkness. And, behold, there met him a womanWith the attire of a harlot, and wily of heart.(She is clamorous and willful; Her feet abide not in... read more

Proverbs 7:1. My son, keep my words— Chastity is a virtue of so much consequence, and impurity such a bane to youth, that the wise man thought he could not too often make mention of the danger of the one, to move men carefully to preserve the other; therefore he repeats with renewed importunities what he had before urged; and, the better to secure those who desire to be free from the snare of lewdness, he represents, together with the simpleness of young men, the cunning and crafty desires of... read more

Proverbs 7:4. Call understanding thy kinswoman— Thy relation: The LXX have it, Make wisdom thy acquaintance. "Say to wisdom, Thou art my sister, my spouse, my beloved, my inclination. Proverbs 7:14. I have peace-offerings with me— This woman was the more abominable, as she covered her lewdness with the mask of piety and devotion. There were three sorts of peace-offerings. See Leviticus 7:11; Leviticus 12:8. Bishop Patrick takes these mentioned here to have been the last of them; offerings of thanksgiving for blessings already obtained; not of prayer for blessings not yet received: and his reason is, because she was so solicitous to have company at her feast upon this very... read more
