the fear = the reverence. the LORD* . One of the 134 alterations of the Sopherim ( App-32 ), by which the name "Jehovah" in the primitive text, was changed to Adonai. that is wisdom. This was a libel on Job, for Job had this "fear" or reverence; yet he was suffering. That was the very point in question, and leads up to the answer. This was Zophar's philosophy. The fear of the LORD is not true wisdom; it is only "the beginning of wisdom" (Psalms 111:10 . Proverbs 1:7 ; Proverbs 9:10 ). True... read more

JOB 28WISDOM - THE GREATEST TREASURE AND HARDEST TO FINDAfter a review of the reasons and speculations why some scholars would refer this chapter to Zophar, Hesser wrote that, "There is therefore no good reason for assigning this chapter to Zophar."[1] This chapter is a remarkably well-planned and eloquent discussion of the wisdom that comes from God alone. THE GREAT SECRET OF TRUE WISDOM REVEALED"God understandeth the way thereof,And he knoweth the place thereof. For he looketh to the ends of the earth,And seeth under the whole heaven; To make a weight for the wind:Yea, he meteth out the waters by measure. When he made a decree for the rain,And a way for the lightning of the thunder; Then did he see it, and declare it;He established it, yea, and searched it out.And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. And to depart from... read more

CHAP. XXVIII. Job observes, that man, though he can find out the hidden veins of silver, gold, iron, and brass, yet cannot find out wisdom: God hath taught him that wisdom consists in the fear of the Lord. Before Christ 1645. Job 28:1. Surely there is a vein for the silver— See the Reflections on the 28th verse, p. 806. This chapter, as it is one of the most beautiful and instructive, so perhaps, we may adds it is the most obscure of the whole book. The subject of it is an inquiry after wisdom:... read more
