John Dummelow's Commentary on the Bible - 2 Chronicles 25:1-28

Reign of AmaziahThis chapter is derived in the main from 2 Kings 14:1-20, but with two insertions, 2 Kings 14:5-10 and 2 Kings 14:13-16.5. Made them captains, etc.] better, ’arranged them according to their fathers’ houses under captains.’ From twenty years old] Under this age military service was not required: Numbers 1:3; 1 Chronicles 27:23.7. Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers - 2 Chronicles 25:26

(26) First and last.—The former and the latter. The chronicler adds his usual formula.Behold, are they not written.—The Hebrew is faulty here. “Behold, they are written” is the customary phrase in the Chronicles (2 Chronicles 20:34; 2 Chronicles 24:27); “are they not written” being that of Kings. In the Hebrew text here the two phrases are blended. Some- MSS., and the Syriac, Vulg., and Arabic read, “Behold, they are written.” But it is possible that hinnâm (“behold they”) is here a corruption... read more

JOASH AND AMAZIAH2 Chronicles 24:1-27; 2 Chronicles 25:1-28FOR Chronicles, as for the book of Kings, the main interest of the reign of Joash is the repairing of the Temple; but the later narrative introduces modifications which give a somewhat different complexion to the story. Both authorities tell us that Joash did that. which was right in the eyes of Jehovah all the days of Jehoiada, but the book of Kings immediately adds that "the high places were not taken away: the people still sacrificed... read more

L. M. Grant's Commentary on the Bible - 2 Chronicles 25:1-28

AMAZIAH BEGINS WELL (vv.1-4) The reign of Amaziah was relatively long, ¾ 29 years, because, as his father Joash, he at first did what was outwardly right in the eyes of the Lord, though his heart was not fully for the Lord (v.2). Like Joash also, his testimony for good broke down in his later years, so that it is questionable if he knew the Lord at all. When his kingdom was established he executed the two servants who had killed his father (v.3), but in accordance with scripture... read more

JEHORAM TO HEZEHIAH JEHORAM (2 Chronicles 21:0 ) Jehoshaphat followed Rehoboam’s example in arranging for his sons (2 Chronicles 21:3 ), but without the hoped-for result (2 Chronicles 21:4 ). Such a brother as Jehoram proved might be expected to act in his kingly capacity as verses five to seven testify. Elijah (2 Chronicles 21:12 ) may be mistaken of the transcribers for Elisha, as the former died earlier (2 Kings 2:0 ); unless we take the view in the margin that this was a “writing” he... read more

Amaziah 2 Chronicles 25:0 THE most remarkable feature in the character of Amaziah is his half-heartedness. He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign; he reigned nine-and-twenty years, and was murdered at Lachish by conspirators. He was neither all bad nor all good. His day was made up of cloud and glory. He was neither wise nor foolish; yet he was both. He came as near as any man in history ever came to be that mysterious fountain that can send forth both sweet water and bitter. ... read more

Much of this history we have 2 Kings 14:0 . But we shall do well to observe in the sad history of the termination of his life, what is said; it came of God. Yes! when sinners reject the counsel of God, it is against their own souls, how frequently are they made to do the very reverse of what they intend! read more

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on the Bible - 2 Chronicles 25:17-28

17-28 Never was a proud prince more thoroughly mortified than Amaziah by Joash king of Israel. A man's pride will bring him low, Proverbs 29:23; it goes before his destruction, and deservedly brings it on. He that exalteth himself shall be abased. He that goes forth hastily to strive, will not know what he shall do in the end thereof, when his neighbour has put him to shame, Proverbs 25:8. And what are we when we offer to establish our own righteousness, or presume to justify ourselves before... read more

Amaziah's Idolatry and Defeat by Israel v. 14. Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, which, however, gave him no lasting advantages, 2 Chronicles 21:10, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, the idols of the conquered army, to which he had taken a liking for some reason, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them, for they were, at least in part, images of the sun, and the burning... read more
