Verse 5

"If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night (how art thou cut off?), would they not steal only till they had enough? If grape-gathers came to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes?"

The purpose of this verse is to suggest that the destruction coming upon Edom is to be much worse and far more complete than any mere robbery, in which something would be left. "The prophet is saying that the enemies of Edom will act much worse."[3] The nation shall be completely destroyed. All of this is indicated by the tiny parenthesis, "how art thou cut off?" "which points to Obadiah 1:1:9, indicating that the prophet was anticipating the principal fact of his denunciation."[4]
