crucified = hung upon a stake. Greek. stauros was not two pieces of wood at any angle. It was an upright pale or stake. Same as xulon, a piece of timber (Acts 5:30 ; Acts 5:10 , Acts 5:39 . Galatians 1:3 , Galatians 1:13 . 1 Peter 2:24 ). Even the Latin crux means a mere stake, or stave (compare verses: Matthew 26:47 , Matthew 26:55 , &c.); while stauroo (here) means to drive stakes. See App-162 .
