1 Kings 18:38 -

It may mean dry earth, but this altar had been deluged with water], and licked up [ לָחַךְ is clearly onomatopoetic, like our lick ; Germ. lecken ; Gr. λείχω , etc. It expresses well the action of tongues of flame] the water that was in the trench.
