Introduction

A Song of degrees.

This is a perfect model of a true pilgrim-psalm, dating at the close of the day in sight of the hills of Jerusalem, when the company halt for the night’s rest. The outlook is full of inspiring anticipation, Psalms 121:1. The journey is nearly ended, and strong trust and grateful retrospect fill the hour of evening meditation. Jehovah is his hope, (Psalms 121:2;) his foot shall not slide, (Psalms 121:3;) Israel’s keeper is ever watchful, he sleeps not, (Psalms 121:4;) his shade is the pilgrim’s protection, day and night, from all evil, in all his ways, for ever, Psalms 121:5-8. The associations are such as are incident to a journey, or, figuratively, to common life, and such as would specially occupy the anxious thoughts of a traveller. On the title see note on title of Psalms 120:0
